Towards Learning Object Detectors with Limited Data for Industrial Applications
Karim Guirguis
English | 2024 | ISBN: 9783731513896 | 262 Pages | True PDF | 52 MB

In this dissertation, three novel Generalized Few-Shot Object Detection (G-FSOD) approaches are presented to minimize the forgetting of previously learned classes while learning new classes with limited data. The first two approaches reduce the forgetting of base classes if they are still available during training. The third approach, for scenarios without base data, uses knowledge distillation to improve the knowledge transfer.

Transforming the Politics of International Law: The Advisory Committee of Jurists and the Formation of the World Court in the League of Nations
by P. Sean Morris
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0367897512 | 291 Pages | PDF | 4.67 MB

This volume examines the role of League of Nations committees, particularly the Advisory Committee of Jurists (ACJ) in shaping the statute of the Permanent Court of International Justice (PCIJ). The authors explore the contributions of individual jurists and unofficial members in shaping the League's international legal machinery. It is a companion book to The League of Nations and the Development of International Law: A New Intellectual History of the Advisory Committee of Jurists (Routledge, 2021).
One of the guiding principles of the book is that the development of international law was a project of politics where the idea and notion of an international society must contend with the political visions of each state represented on the different legal committees in the League of Nations during the drafting of the Covenant. The book constitutes a major contribution to the literature in that it shows the inner workings of some of the legal committees of the League and how the political role of unofficial members was influential for the development of international law in the early twentieth century and how they influenced the political and legal process of the ACJ.
The book will be an essential reference for those working in the areas of International Law, Legal History, International Relations, Political History, and European History.

True Purposes in Hegel's Logic
by Edgar Maraguat
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1009304941 | 271 Pages | PDF | 1.7 MB

This book addresses a key issue in Hegel's philosophical legacy - his account of purposiveness and teleology - that has often been wrongly criticised and misunderstood. In a re-examination of Hegel's account of purposiveness and teleology, Edgar Maraguat explores its connection with the rest of Hegel's philosophy, traces the influence of Aristotle and Kant on its arguments, and closely analyses its place in Hegel's Science of Logic. The result is a new perspective not only on the nature, spirit and goals of the Logic, but on the whole of Hegel's philosophical legacy, and will appeal to a range of readers in Hegel studies, the history of philosophy, and the history of ideas.

Uexküll's Surroundings: Umwelt Theory and Right-Wing Thought
by Gottfried Schnödl, Florian Sprenger
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3957962013 | 254 Pages | True PDF | 2.9 MB

With its diversity of possible Umwelten or environments for living things, Jakob von Uexküll's Umwelt theory has been hailed by many readers as the first step toward an innovative, pluralistic conception of nonhuman life. But what is generally ignored is its structural conservatism, its identitarian logic in which everything should remain in its place and nothing should mix, and its proximity to Nazi ideology and politics. By turning the spotlight on these neglected aspects, Uexküll's Surroundings opens up a new perspective on Uexküll's Umwelt theory.

In Unarmed Fighting Techniques of the Samurai, world-renowned ninja grandmaster and bestselling author Masaaki Hatsumi explains the fundamentals of various unarmed techniques unique to the Japanese martial arts. Known as budo taijutsu, these specialized moves allow the practitioner to evade and receive an attack even from an opponent wielding a sword. Hatsumi covers such topics as Kihon Happo (Eight Basic Movements), Kosshijutsu (Attacks Against Muscles), Koppojutsu (Attacks Against Bones), Jutaijutsu (Flexible Body Arts), Daken Taijutsu (Fist Punching and Striking), Ninpo Taijutsu (Bodily Arts of the Ninja), discussing and demonstrating the many techniques which will enable the fighter to punch, kick and finally lock or control the body of his adversary.

As Hatsumi tells us, the techniques have been secretly passed down from the masters to their students for more than a century, and have become the foundations for a range of other martial arts including judo, karate and aikido. This book will thus enhance the readers understanding of the roots of these various disciplines as well as provide fascinating insights into the spirit of the way of the warrior and the martial arts. Undead: (Inter)(in)animation, Feminisms, and the Art of War
by Karen Redrobe
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0520386264 | 253 Pages | True PDF | 14 MB

Undead examines the visual culture of war, broadly understood, through the lens of animation. Focusing on works in which relational, intermedial, and variably paced practices of "(inter)(in)animation" generate aesthetic tactics for thinking about, feeling, and reframing war, Karen Redrobe analyzes works by artists including Yael Bartana, Nancy Davenport, Kelly Dolak and Wazhmah Osman, Gesiye, David Hartt, Helen Hill, Onyeka Igwe, Maryam Mohajer, Ibrahim Nasrallah, and Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley. Deftly moving between cinema and media studies, peace and conflict studies, and art history, Undead is an interdisciplinary feminist meditation on the complex relationship between states of war and the discourses, infrastructures, and institutions through which memory, change, and understanding are made.

Unexpected Encounters: Migrants and Tourists in the Mediterranean
by Francesco Vietti

Exploring the intersections between migration and tourism in the Mediterranean, this book is the result of extensive ethnographic research carried out over a decade in the Mediterranean regions. The book shows how interconnected mobilities play a crucial role in boosting the global dynamics of cultural, social, economic and political transformation in the Mediterranean.

Ungovernable Spaces: Community Formation and the Poetics of Resistance
by Kristen Kreider, James O'Leary
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1350409081 | 281 Pages | True PDF | 8.9 MB

What does it mean to be governed and what does it mean to resist? Examining how communities form amidst social and political turbulence, this book presents four case studies that demonstrate the power of organic social formations over imposed order.
Understanding this formation of community in terms of 'ungovernability' and a 'poetics of resistance', Ungovernable Spaces charts a movement from oppression, through transformation, into imagining, and finally emergence.
Throughout the book, the authors engage methods of situated practice and related modes of writing and image-making to consider a range of global case studies: the destruction of the Mecca apartment building in Chicago's South Side in 1952, following a decade of resistance from the building's predominantly African American occupants; M.K. Gandhi's practices of social activism including the Salt March protest of 1930, and the daily practice of spinning and intermittent fasts; the Ciudad Abierta (Open City), a radical pedagogical experiment started by a poet and an architect in Valparaíso, Chile in 1970; and, finally, the urban ecologies developing on either side of Belfast's 'peace walls' in the wake of the Troubles and 1998's Good Friday Agreement.
Structured via four spatial configurations - the grid, the charkha, the constellation, and the cluster -each case study explores community formation through artistic and aesthetic practices that resist and unsettle forms of hegemonic order. A truly interdisciplinary work at the intersection of poetry, art and spatial practice, Ungovernable Spaces argues for the importance of ethics, aesthetics, imagination and ecology in developing, of necessity, a new poetics of 'us.' In doing so, it demonstrates how the formation of community in and through resistance has the potential to introduce new models of social and cultural interaction that make something new, something different, something unknown of the world.

Urban Elite Culture: A Methodological Study of Aristocracy and Civic Elites in Sea-Trading Towns of the Southwestern Baltic (12th-14th c.)
by Luisa Radohs
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3412528609 | 692 Pages | PDF | 37 MB

Medieval towns were vibrant and complex social environments where diverse groups and lifestyles encountered and influenced each other. Surprisingly, in the study of urban archaeology, the aristocracy, one of the leading and most influential groups in medieval society, has so far been neglected. This book puts "aristocracy in towns" on the archaeological research agenda. The interdisciplinary and comparative study explores the significance and representation of aristocrats and their interaction with civic elites in sea-trading towns of the southwestern Baltic from the 12th to the 14th centuries. Essentially, however, the analysis of urban elite culture leads to discussion of a much more fundamental issue: the informative value of material culture for the investigation of social conditions. The book provides new archaeological approaches to the study of social differentiation in towns, and contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexity of urban social structures.
