99% Perspiration: A New Working History of the American Way of Life by Adam Chandler
English | January 7, 2025 | ISBN: 0593700570 | 304 pages | PDF | 2.89 Mb
An enlightening and entertaining interrogation of the myth of American self-reliance and the idea of hard work as destiny

"Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration." This phrase, arguably Thomas Edison's most famous quote, has been drilled into the minds of generations of Americans. A fairly straightforward iteration of the idea that innovation, discovery, and ingenuity are the result of drive and grit above all, it has also come to represent much darker myths: that hard work always leads to success and that achievement is the product of individuals and not communities. In this model, those who come out on top are there because they earned it, and everyone else needs to buckle down, glove up, and, maybe one day, they'll get there too.
As the wealth gap widens, communities crumble, and Americans work more for less, Adam Chandler raises the question: What happens when perspiration isn't enough? To answer it, he crisscrosses the country interviewing mayors, teachers, generals, pastors, construction workers, and entrepreneurs, to reveal just how untenable relying on "perspiration" as a strategy has truly become. He also delves into America's past to reveal how our government, education system, and culture at large have woven the idea of meritocracy deep into the fabric of American society and how some of history's most famous so-called bootstrappers really built their wealth. From George Washington to Seattle,Washington, Jay Gatsby to Bill Gates, 99% Perspiration unpacks the misguided obsession with hard work that has come to define both the American dream and nightmare, offering insight into how we got here and hope for where we may go.

A 21st Century Cyber-Physical Systems Education By and Medicine Engineering National Academies of Sciences; Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences; Computer Science and Telecommunications Board; Committee on 21st Century Cyber-Physical Systems Education
2017 | 107 Pages | ISBN: 0309451639 | EPUB | 1 MB
Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are "engineered systems that are built from, and depend upon, the seamless integration of computational algorithms and physical components." CPS can be small and closed, such as an artificial pancreas, or very large, complex, and interconnected, such as a regional energy grid. CPS engineering focuses on managing inter- dependencies and impact of physical aspects on cyber aspects, and vice versa. With the development of low-cost sensing, powerful embedded system hardware, and widely deployed communication networks, the reliance on CPS for system functionality has dramatically increased. These technical developments in combination with the creation of a workforce skilled in engineering CPS will allow the deployment of increasingly capable, adaptable, and trustworthy systems. Engineers responsible for developing CPS but lacking the appropriate education or training may not fully understand at an appropriate depth, on the one hand, the technical issues associated with the CPS software and hardware or, on the other hand, techniques for physical system modeling, energy and power, actuation, signal processing, and control. In addition, these engineers may be designing and implementing life-critical systems without appropriate formal training in CPS methods needed for verification and to assure safety, reliability, and security. A workforce with the appropriate education, training, and skills will be better positioned to create and manage the next generation of CPS solutions. A 21st Century Cyber-Physical Systems Education examines the intellectual content of the emerging field of CPS and its implications for engineering and computer science education. This report is intended to inform those who might support efforts to develop curricula and materials; faculty and university administrators; industries with needs for CPS workers; and current and potential students about intellectual foundations, workforce requirements, employment opportunities, and curricular needs.

2017 | 220 Pages | ISBN: 1443895938 | PDF | 1 MB
The progress of modern science and technology has led to remarkable insights into the nature of the universe and of human life. These insights have challenged and transformed former traditional worldviews and narratives. This book explores and addresses the challenges that arise at the interface of science and religion in the 21st century. How does science affect the way that religion is perceived? Do modern scientific findings confirm or invalidate the perspective of faith? How does science lead religious persons to revise the way they understand their faith and its practices? Is a mutually respectful and mutually beneficial dialogue possible between science and faith? Drawing from many disciplines, psychology, theology, philosophy, history, cognitive science, education, this book considers the crucial questions of how science and religion can help shape our worldviews and ways of life today.

A Body Broken for a Broken People : Marriage, Divorce and the Eucharist By Francis J. Moloney
2015 | 279 Pages | ISBN: 0232532044 | EPUB | 1 MB
Francis J. Moloney's A Body Broken for a Broken People has become a classic study of what the New Testament reveals about the Eucharistic practice of the early Church. Completely revised and extended to address contemporary pastoral issues in light of Pope Francis's Synod on the Family, this substantially revised edition examines the New Testament's discussion of divorce, remarriage, and access to the Eucharistic table. Through a close reading of the New Testament texts, Professor Moloney shows that, without fail, they indicate that the Eucharist is not a reward for the perfect, but God's gracious nourishment for the weak. A Body Broken for a Broken People provides fresh insights from the Scriptures into the purpose of the Eucharist in the Christian community, Eucharistic hospitality, and especially what it means for those who have divorced and remarried. It is also an exemplary case study of courageously reading the New Testament with fresh eyes, and contributing exegetical insight to a responsible examination of the Church's pastoral practices.

A Charter of Rights for Australia By Daniel Reynolds; George Williams
2017 | 106 Pages | ISBN: 1742235433 | EPUB | 1 MB
Australia does not have a bill or charter of rights, which means there is no comprehensive law that enshrines human rights in Australia - even though these laws are standard in the rest of the developed world. So what does this mean for the rights of Australian citizens? In this fully revised fourth edition of A Charter of Rights for Australia, George Williams and Daniel Reynolds show that human rights are not adequately protected in Australia, contrary to what many of us think. Using some pressing examples, they demonstrate how the rights of people at the margins of our society are violated in often shocking ways. Several states and territories have adopted their own charters of rights, or have a charter well underway. This book's argument that the time has come to adopt a charter at the federal level is more urgent than ever.

A Christian Justice for the Common Good By Tex Sample
2016 | 103 Pages | ISBN: 1501814265 | EPUB | 1 MB
Do Christians bring a unique, scriptural understanding of social justice to bear on the ills of society? Would such an understanding reshape the way Christians engage and partner with others working to create a more just world? Much of the modern conversation around creating justice focuses on ideas that too often reduce justice to human rights, procedural justice, and even the consumerism of the contemporary culture/economy. While the priorities of human rights and due process are necessary for fashioning a just world, the Christian understanding of the common good is much richer and calls the church beyond fairness to forms of liberation, compassion, mercy, and peace that are even more radical than the best notions of justice that characterize the nation-state at the beginning of the 21st century. A Christian Justice for the Common Good describes a Christian justice for the common good and what it looks like on the ground in real world settings. Calling Christians (individuals, as well as communities of faith) to a concrete version of social well-being befitting faithful life in Jesus and God's vision of justice for the world, Tex Sample drills deeper and identifies the skills that must be cultivated to do justice work with others--work that will create a lasting impact while extending a Christian vision for the common good. The conclusion? The freedom God offers in Christ finds its place in concrete Christian efforts and the graced wherewithal of people who work generously with one another for a new and just life together. Contents include: 1. The Reduction of Justice to Human Rights 2. A Christian Justice 3. The Formation of a Just Church 4. Skills of Justice 5. Doing Justice with Others 6. A Justice of the Common Good

A Constellation of Ghosts: A Speculative Memoir with Ravens By Laraine Herring
2021 | 236 Pages | ISBN: 164603080X | EPUB | 1 MB
A ghost is not what you think it is, says Raven. A ghost is a commitment. When Laraine Herring receives an unexpected colon cancer diagnosis, her father, thirty years dead, returns to her as a raven, setting off a magical journey into complicated grief, inherited trauma, and ancestral healing. As she struggles with redefining her expectations for her life, she slips further and further underground into the ancestral realm, where she finds herself writing a play directed by her father-as-raven. Raven says, It will be a cast of only four: you and me and my mother and my father, and we will speak until there are no more words between us. And then you can decide the ending. Tick, tock, write. A Constellation of Ghosts takes the reader into the liminal spaces between one world and another, where choices unspool into lives, and the stories we've told ourselves fall apart under the scrutiny of multiple perspectives like flesh from bone, reminding us that grief is the unexpected ferryman who can usher all of us back together again.

A Dictionary of Hallucinations by Jan Dirk Blom
English | June 24, 2023 | ISBN: 3031252470 | 816 pages | PDF, EPUB | 207 Mb
The Dictionary of Hallucinations, second edition, is an alphabetical listing of issues pertaining to hallucinations and other misperceptions. They can be roughly divided into four categories:

1. Definitions of individual hallucinatory symptoms
2. Medical conditions and substances associated with the mediation of hallucinations
3. Historical figures who are known to have experienced hallucinations
4. Miscellaneous issues
Each of the definitions of individual hallucinatory symptoms includes:
a definition of the termits etymological originthe year of introduction (if known)a reference to the author or authors who introduced the term (if known)a description of the current usea brief explanation of theetiology and pathophysiology of the symptom at hand (if known)references to related termsreferences to the literatureThe second edition of A Dictionary of Hallucinations serves as a reference manual for neuroscientists, psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, psychologists, neurologists, historians of psychiatry, general practitioners, and academics dealing professionally with concepts of hallucinations and other sensory deceptions. This new edition provides updated information and references, and includes newly discovered hallucinations, bringing together contributions by other authorities within the field, with all the entries edited by Prof. Blom.
Doody's Review: The book's purpose is to provide a collection of terms and related information for a variety of clinical and non-clinical applications, that can serve as a springboard for further inquiry about specific and lesser-known sensory phenomena. Not only does this book meet its objectives, but it fills a void in providing a comprehensive list of technical terms matched to otherwise hard-to-describe human experiences.

A Federal Perspective on the Abkhaz-Georgian Conflict : From Intractability to Pacification By Romina Gurashi; Neno Gabelia
2017 | 126 Pages | ISBN: 1443895067 | PDF | 1 MB
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the problem of the development of regional security has become increasingly relevant in international politics. Of particular concern is the post-Soviet space, which remains in the most difficult process of transformation. The Georgian-Abkhaz conflict, which entered a sharp phase in 1992, was one of the first and most lengthy (1992-2008) international conflicts in the former Soviet Union. Complex factors, such as the deep roots of the confrontation, the great human sacrifices of the political parties during the hostilities, the high degree of defensive involvement of the entire population of Abkhazia, and the asymmetry in the approaches of the parties, all determine the need for an analysis of the nature and the origins and dynamics of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict. This book identifies the nature and the origins of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict and the causes of the inefficiency of the official negotiation process, and it evaluates the hypothesis of a possible federalist transformation of the institutions of both Georgia and Abkhazia. In the international panorama, federalism, in fact, is being increasingly considered as an instrument of conflict transformation in the case of conflicts based on cultural diversity and ethnicity.

A Functional Account of Marathi's Voice Phenomena : Passives and Causatives in Marathi By Prashant Pardeshi
2016 | 210 Pages | ISBN: 9004292519 | PDF | 1 MB
A Functional Account of Marathi's Voice Phenomena offers a comprehensive account of the formal and semantic aspects of the two most prominent voice phenomena in Marathi: the passive and the causative. Previous studies offer many partial insights into various aspects of Marathi's passives and causatives. However, a comprehensive description of the formal, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of Marathi's passives and causatives as not been available so far. Attempting to fill this gap, the present monograph offers a description in the functional-typological framework. At the same time it introduces the reader to the rich tradition of grammatical studies in Marathi, which up to now have remained inaccessible to those who are unfamiliar with the language.

A God More Powerful Than Yours : American Evangelicals, Politics, and the Internet Age By Christopher W. Boerl; Katie Donbavand
2015 | 128 Pages | ISBN: 144387437X | PDF | 1 MB
Throughout American history, religious movements have repeatedly proved themselves to be powerful forces capable of masterfully manipulating the social and political landscape of the nation. Key to the influence religious organizations have historically held in the United States is their use of communication technologies. In this vivid account, Christopher Boerl and Katie Donbavand adroitly weave a rich narrative illuminating the effects various historical phenomena have had and the reactionary religious response which followed. Through shifting social norms and political realities, the authors also show the role media has played in nurturing religious movements and fanaticism. Broadcast media in particular is identified as a unique conduit through which the now dominant, conservative articulation of Christianity both took root in the United States and flourished as an imposing cultural standard. More recently, new communication technologies, such as the Internet and social media, have usurped the reign of broadcast media. In so doing, these technologies are serving as a form of religious pluralization and theological fragmentation.
