Lady Midrash : Poems Reclaiming the Voices of Biblical Women By Elisabeth Mehl Greene; Kendra Weddle Irons
2016 | 170 Pages | ISBN: 1498284191 | PDF | 1 MB
What if the women of the Bible told their own stories? Lady Midrash: Poems Reclaiming the Voices of Biblical Women brings to life alternative interpretations and forgotten female perspectives from the Hebrew Bible and New Testament. Following in the footsteps of Jewish midrash, a storytelling tradition that explores the gaps in scripture, these poems re-examine the experiences of Biblical women. Sidelined heroines are celebrated. Supposed villainesses get to speak for themselves. Lady Midrash reverses convention, probes familiar narratives, attends to small moments, highlights peripheral and silent characters, and names the nameless. The imagination of midrash provides the reader with a creative space to rethink assumptions and reconsider the accounts of women in the Jewish and Christian traditions.

Land Between the Rivers: A 5,000-Year History of Iraq by Bartle Bull
English | September 10, 2024 | ISBN: 0802162509 | 576 pages | PDF | 10 Mb
The epic, five millennia history of the region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers that was the birthplace of civilization and remains today the essential crossroads between East and West

At the start of the fourth millennium BC, at the edge of historical time, civilization first arrived with the advent of cities and the invention of writing that began to replace legend with history. This occurred on the floodplains of southern Iraq where the great rivers Tigris and Euphrates meet the Persian Gulf. By 3000 BC, a city called Uruk (from which "Iraq" is derived) had 80,000 residents. Indeed, as Bartle Bull reveals in his magisterial history, "if one divides the 5,000 years of human civilization into ten periods of five centuries each, during the first nine of these the world's leading city was in one of the three regions of current day Iraq"-or to use its Greek name, Mesopotamia.
Inspired by extensive reporting from the region to spend a decade delving deep into its history, Bull chronicles the story of Iraq from the exploits of Gilgamesh (almost certainly an historical figure) to the fall of the Iraqi monarchy in 1958 that ushered in its familiar modern era. The land between the rivers has been the melting pot and battleground of countless outsiders, from the Akkadians of Hammurabi and the Greeks of Alexander to the Ottomans of Suleiman the Magnificent. Here, by the waters of Babylon, Judaism was born and the Sunni-Shia schism took its bloody shape.
Central themes play out over the millennia: humanity's need for freedom versus the co-eternal urge of tyranny; the ever-present conflict and cross-fertilization of East and West with Iraq so often the hinge. We tend to view today's tensions in the Middle East through the prism of the last hundred years since the Treaty of Versailles imposed a controversial realignment of its borders. Bartle Bull's remarkable, sweeping achievement reminds us that the region defined by the land between the rivers has for five millennia played a uniquely central role on the global stage.

Langston Hughes and the *Chicago Defender*: Essays on Race, Politics, and Culture, 1942-62 By Langston Hughes
2022 | 179 Pages | ISBN: 0252064747 | EPUB | 1 MB
Langston Hughes is well known as a poet, playwright, novelist, social activist, communist sympathizer, and brilliant member of the Harlem Renaissance. He has been referred to as the "Dean of Black Letters" and the "poet low-rate of Harlem." But it was as a columnist for the famous African-American newspaper the Chicago Defender that Hughes chronicled the hopes and despair of his people. For twenty years, he wrote forcefully about international race relations, Jim Crow, the South, white supremacy, imperialism and fascism, segregation in the armed forces, the Soviet Union and communism, and African-American art and culture. None of the racial hypocrisies of American life escaped his searing, ironic prose. This is the first collection of Hughes's nonfiction journalistic writings. For readers new to Hughes, it is an excellent introduction; for those familiar with him, it gives new insights into his poems and fiction.

Language across Languages : New Perspectives on Translation By Emanuele Miola; Paolo Ramat
2015 | 193 Pages | ISBN: 1443877115 | PDF | 1 MB
Since the first written documents in the history of mankind (produced at the end of the 4th millennium BC), translation has always played a pivotal role in human societies. Translators were needed whenever the need for contact between different-speaking communities arose, such as for the purposes of communication, commerce, and declarations of war, or peace. Translation is even more important in today's world. Globalization has brought the nations of the Earth closer, to the extent that books, movies and television programs released or aired far away in the world are just a click of the mouse away. However, such cultural products still have to be translated in order to be enjoyed by a wider audience. In international relations, diplomacies work very much on the basis of what is said and written, meaning that official documents and political charts need to be correctly and precisely translated. Hi-tech devices, such as tablets and smartphones, have their software translated into an increasing number of languages, in order to be accessible to a larger number of people. The challenging issues that arise for translation studies from these socio-cultural changes in Western Europe and all over the world are tackled in this volume according to two intertwined viewpoints: From a strictly linguistic perspective, typological differences between genetically unrelated languages challenge linguists in gaining an overall understanding of what language really is: how can linguistic categories, be they verbal, nominal or pertaining to other domains of the grammar, be defined? How are they shaped in syntax? From the point of view of anthropological linguistics, on the other hand, the cross-linguistic differences that come to the fore illustrate that translating - as well as language itself - is one of the basic cognitive strategies of the human mind.

Language Contact in Sanandaj: A Study of the Impact of Iranian on Neo-Aramaic by Geoffrey Khan, Masoud Mohammadirad
English | November 6, 2023 | ISBN: 3111205789 | 614 pages | MOBI | 2.10 Mb
This book is a detailed study of contact-induced change in the Neo-Aramaic dialect of the Jews of Sanandaj, a town in western Iran. Since its foundation in early 17th century, the city has been home to a significant Jewish community. The Jewish Neo-Aramaic dialect of the town displays different historical layers of contact with various Iranian languages over the course of many centuries. The Iranian languages in question are Gorani, Kurdish, and Persian. Among these, Gorani has had a particularly deep impact on Jewish Neo-Aramaic, whereas the impact of Kurdish, and especially Persian, remains superficial. Jewish Neo-Aramaic records a history of language shift from Gorani to Kurdish in the region. The book offers insights into contact-induced change in social contexts in which a language is maintained as a demarcation of communal identity in a multilingual setting.

Latinx Literature Unbound : Undoing Ethnic Expectation By Ralph E. Rodriguez
2018 | 193 Pages | ISBN: 0823279243 | EPUB | 1 MB
Since the 1990s, there has been unparalleled growth in the literary output from an ever more diverse group of Latina/o writers. The extant criticism, however, has yet to catch up with the diversity of writers we label Latina/o and the range of themes about which they write. Little sustained scholarly attention has been paid, moreover, to the very category-Latina/o-under which we group this literature. Latina/o Literature Unbound, thus, begins with a fundamental question "What does it mean to label a work of literature or an entire corpus of literature Latina/o?" From this question a host of others spin out: What does that grouping allow us to see, predispose us to see, and preclude us from seeing? If the grouping-which brings together a heterogeneous collection of people and groups under a seemingly homogeneous label-tells us something meaningful, is there a poetics we can develop that would facilitate our analysis of this literature? In answering these questions, Latina/o Literature Unbound seeks to unbind Latina/o literature from taken-for-granted critical assumptions about identity and theme. It argues that there may be more salubrious taxonomies than Latina/o for organizing and analyzing this literature. Following a neo-formalist interpretive model that privileges reading as a temporal, meaning-making event, the book argues that genre may be a more durable category for analyzing this literature. Finally, Latina/o Literature Unbound suggests some ways in which we might want to proceed as we move forward with future studies of the writing we have come to identify as Latina/o.

Law and Behavioral Sciences : Why We Need Less Purity Rather than More By Peter Mascini
2016 | 43 Pages | ISBN: 9462366799 | PDF | 1 MB
In his inaugural lecture, Peter Mascini takes issue with the goal of scientific purity in the behavioral study of law conceived as the deliberate choice to postulate a limited number of universally applicable behavioral principles. The guiding principle of behavioral sociology is that law behaves in correspondence to social space, while the guiding principle of law and economics is that individuals behave rationally. Behavioral economics has challenged the principle of the rational actor and, consequently, has also challenged the desire for scientific purity in law and economics. Peter Mascini defends a two-fold thesis: first, that the purification of sociology proposed by behavioral sociology is a blind alley that can only be exited by allowing impurity. Second, that the behavioral economics movement has offered law and economics an opportunity to reinvigorate by embracing impurity. The combination of the two parts of his thesis lead him to the claim that we need less purity in the behavioral study of law rather than more. He ends his lecture by stating that the introduction of impurity that has been started by behavioral economics needs to be extended in several respects. He proposes to replace the behavioral study of law by an approach that not only takes empirical research seriously, but also adopts a modest attitude by surrendering the ambition to come up with universally applicable predictions and by taking seriously meaningful behavior. (Series: Erasmus Law Lectures, Vol. 41) [Subject: Behavioral Sociology, Law and Economics, Behavioral Economics, Private Law]

Law Without Lawyers, Justice Without Courts : On Traditional Chinese Mediation By Bee Chen Goh
2002 | 162 Pages | ISBN: 184014744X | EPUB | 1 MB
The Chinese have, since ancient times, professed a non-litigious outlook. Similarly, their preference for mediation has fascinated the West for centuries. Mediation has been popularized by the Chinese who subscribe to the Confucian notions of harmony and compromise. It has been perpetuated in the People's Republic of China and by the overseas Chinese communities elsewhere, such as in Malaysia and Taiwan. Seen as the chief contributing factor in their litigation-averse nature, as well as the reason behind the significant role given to traditional mediation, this compelling book traces the cultural tradition of the Chinese. It uses rural Chinese Malaysians as illustrative examples and offers new insights into the nature of mediation East and West. It is an important reference and essential resource for anyone keen to learn about traditional Chinese concepts of law, justice and dispute settlement. Equally, it makes a unique contribution to the existing ADR literature by undertaking a socio-legal study on traditional Chinese mediation.

Leadership and School Boards : Guarding the Trust in an Era of Community Engagement By Laura E. Reimer; Dr. John F. Wiens
2015 | 169 Pages | ISBN: 1475815069 | EPUB | 1 MB
School boards shape society through systems of education. They choose who leads the system and how educators are selected to lead classrooms. They approve the allocation of millions of dollars every year. As leaders, the school board determines how their community defines the values, resources, and belief systems that together form the democratic mosaic of our times. Embedded within this knowledge are timeless foundations that have carried us from the origins of school boards to our current systems; these are the keys to community engagement, and these are the keys to empowered and strong school systems. This book is about the remarkable and unique purpose of school boards. It is not a book about abolition, or drastic reform. It explains clearly that school boards were established as part of the foundation for a strong democratic society and encourages everyone involved with school systems to guard that foundation. School boards embody the most immediate principles of democracy. This is an exciting book, appropriate for our times, focused on the powerful leadership necessary in the school board, and the potential to deliver ever-improving results through consistent and deliberate governance.

2001 | 123 Pages | ISBN: 0761968733 | EPUB | 1 MB

The authors provide an overview of all aspects of leadership within education, giving ample references within each section for more detailed study′ - Mentoring and Tutoring `The book would constitute a good starting-point for anyone wishing to understand contemporary developments in educational management′ - Educational Research Leadership and strategic management are both issues of central importance in raising achievement in schools and colleges and thus are at the heart of the educational debate today. Leadership and the Problem of Electoral Democracy in Africa : Case Studies and Theoretical Solutions By E. Ike Udogu
2016 | 268 Pages | ISBN: 1443899399 | PDF | 1 MB
This volume explores the notion that African leaders are fundamentally responsible for electoral malfeasance throughout the continent. The quagmire of fixing elections in order to stay in power ad-infinitum has frequently led - and will continue to lead - to political violence, civil wars, internal displacement of citizens, international refugee crises, and economic malaise with its attendant crisis of underdevelopment. This book provides five case studies selected from Anglophone, Francophone and Lusophone Africa that illustrate some variations and similarities in the dilemma of electoral democracy in this epoch of Africa's democratic experiment. It suggests, among other factors, Colin Powell's and Abraham Lincoln's theoretical templates as pointers for African political chiefs in their struggle for democratic consolidation - a successful move that could advance national legitimacy and political stability critical for impressive development in this millennium.

How can I keep moving forward, when the path suddenly becomes so difficult?' The book covers topics like how to help others leave gracefully, how not to be upended when others choose to leave, how to have difficult conversations, and how to find unexpected opportunity in the challenge of new vacancies. Leadership Transition: How leaders turn chaos into growth by Michael Stanford
English | July 25, 2024 | ISBN: 1911687816 | 256 pages | PDF | 3.27 Mb
Organizations are becoming more fluid and chaotic than ever before. Many leaders face deeply destabilizing experiences at a younger age than in the past. Popular writing on leadership transitions assumes that leaders are simply instruments of the business, and that the task of transitioning into a new role is primarily a task of becoming an even more useful instrument. Leadership Transition is the first attempt to bring lessons from post-trauma growth research into the realm of leadership development. The book is for leaders who are under going significant transitions in their work, either because they've been promoted to new positions or because their organizations are changing in important ways. It is a guide to help these leaders use uncomfortable and sometimes involuntary disruptions in their work to re-examine their leadership, to explore their values, to think creatively about the difference they want to make, and, ultimately, to grow
