Redistribution is a major objective of welfare states. In certain cases, redistribution not only reduces the financial differences between some individuals or groups but also changes their positions in a financial ranking. Prior studies have indicated that such rank reversals can reduce support for redistribution. This book addresses this issue by arguing that if redistribution is aimed at meeting needs rather than promoting equality, the negative effect of rank reversals on the acceptance of redistribution can be reduced. The argument is first supported by a theoretical exploration, which, among others, endeavors to incorporate a no-reranking principle into the well-established list of distributive justice principles. It shows that although individuals may apply the no-reranking principle, the principle is normatively weak, especially compared to the need principle. The argument is further supported by evidence from an online third-party dictator game in which each decision-maker had to redistribute money between two other participants. It varied whether those participants were above or below a specific needs threshold and whether a transfer would reverse ranks or not. The results showed that when redistribution was required to satisfy the poorer person's needs, the negative effect of rank reversals on the acceptance of redistribution almost vanished.

Antifeminism in cultural context To give today's readers an understanding of the social and political forces that actively fought against any changes in women's status in the United States, the editors selected these original examples from the writings of the time that appeared in popular books and magazines. Opponents of women's equality frequently voiced their opinions about 19th-century issues of women's suffrage, dress reform, self-expression, independence, and other topics that touched upon the perceived roles and duties of women. Such public diatribes continued into the 10th century as determined antifeminists argued against increased opportunities for women in employment and education, denied the propriety of family planning, and admonished against women's involvement in politics. Arguments based on ridicule, natural law, and false claims Some opponents merely dismissed or ridiculed calls for changes in women's status, without specifying particular flaws in the feminist position. Others cited divine ordination, applied to natural law, and fanned public fears of familial and social disintegration. Frequently these critics resorted to charges of presumed lesbianism, communism, and socialism against advocates of women's rights and against the movement itself. Reading the Runes in Old English and Old Norse Poetry is the first book-length study to compare responses to runic heritage in the literature of Anglo-Saxon England and medieval Iceland. The Anglo-Saxon runic script had already become the preserve of antiquarians at the time the majority of Old English poetry was written down, and the Icelanders recording the mythology associated with the script were at some remove from the centres of runic practice in medieval Scandinavia. Both literary cultures thus inherited knowledge of the runic system and the traditions associated with it, but viewed this literate past from the vantage point of a developed manuscript culture. There has, as yet, been no comprehensive study of poetic responses to this scriptural heritage, which include episodes in such canonical texts as Beowulf, the Old English riddles and the poems of the Poetic Edda. By analysing the inflection of the script through shared literary traditions, this study enhances our understanding of the burgeoning of literary self-awareness in early medieval vernacular poetry and the construction of cultural memory, and furthers our understanding of the relationship between Anglo-Saxon and Norse textual cultures. The introduction sets out in detail the rationale for examining runes in poetry as a literary motif and surveys the relevant critical debates. The body of the volume is comprised of five linked case studies of runes in poetry, viewing these representations through the paradigm of scriptural reconstruction and the validation of contemporary literary, historical and religious sensibilities.
