Roberto Petrosino, "The Linguistic Sophistication of Morphological Decomposition: More than Islands of Regularity"
English | ISBN: 1527586146 | 2024 | 206 pages | PDF | 8 MB
A wealth of psycholinguistic evidence has shown that words, before being visually recognized, decompose into smaller orthographic units which may seem to correspond to, but aren't necessarily, morphemes. Such a procedure of morphological decomposition is commonly assumed to solely rely on islands of regularity - namely, statistical orthographic regularities, with no regard to the words' meaning. Building on these results, the present investigation assesses the sensitivity of decomposition to non-semantic (i.e., phonological, lexical, and morpho-syntactic) properties, as a way to probe the time-course of visual word processing. In showing that decomposition may also be affected by whole-word lexicality and whole-word frequency, this book proposes a novel model of lexical access, in which decomposition encompasses a multi-step mechanism that first generates multiple possible morpho-orthographic decomposition patterns of the visual stimulus, and then evaluates them in parallel in order to choose the optimal candidate for activation.

Steven E. Lindquist, "The Literary Life of Yajñavalkya "
English | ISBN: 1438495633 | 2024 | 348 pages | PDF | 4 MB
In this fascinating study, Steven E. Lindquist investigates the intersections between historical context and literary production in the "life" of Yājñavalkya, the most important ancient Indian literary figure prior to the Buddha. Known for his sharp tongue and deep thought, Yājñavalkya is associated with a number of "firsts" in Indian religious literary history: the first person to discuss brahman and ātman thoroughly; the first to put forth a theory of karma and reincarnation; the first to renounce his household life; and the first to dispute with women in religious debate. Throughout early Indian history, he was seen as a priestly bearer of ritual authority, a sage of mystical knowledge, and an innovative propagator of philosophical ideas and religious law. Drawing on history, literary studies, ritual studies, Sanskrit philology, narrative studies, and philosophy, Lindquist traces Yājñavalkya's literary life-from his earliest mentions in ritual texts, through his developing biography in the Upaniṣads, and finally to his role as a hoary sage in narrative literature-offering the first detailed monograph on this central figure in early Indian religious and literary history.

The Literature of Japanese American Incarceration by Frank Abe, Floyd Cheung
English | May 14, 2024 | ISBN: 0143133284 | 336 pages | PDF | 8.22 Mb
"An essential volume" -Hua Hsu, The New Yorker

The collective voice of Japanese Americans defined by a specific moment in time: the four years of World War II during which the US government expelled resident aliens and its own citizens from their homes and imprisoned 125,000 of them in American concentration camps, based solely upon the race they shared with a wartime enemy.
A Penguin Classic
This anthology presents a new vision that recovers and reframes the literature produced by the people targeted by the actions of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Congress to deny Americans of Japanese ancestry any individual hearings or other due process after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. From nearly seventy selections of fiction, poetry, essays, memoirs, and letters emerges a shared story of the struggle to retain personal integrity in the face of increasing dehumanization - all anchored by the key government documents that incite the action.
The selections favor the pointed over the poignant, and the unknown over the familiar, with several new translations among previously unseen works that have been long overlooked on the shelf, buried in the archives, or languished unread in the Japanese language. The writings are presented chronologically so that readers can trace the continuum of events as the incarcerees experienced it.
The contributors span incarcerees, their children born in or soon after the camps, and their descendants who reflect on the long-term consequences of mass incarceration for themselves and the nation. Many of the voices are those of protest. Some are those of accommodation. All are authentic. Together they form an epic narrative with a singular vision of America's past, one with disturbing resonances with the American present.

The Little Book of Sanuk: The Thai Secret to a More Joyful Life by Karen Sinotok
English | June 6th, 2024 | ISBN: 0008657815 | 272 pages | MOBI | 110 Mb
We all need a little more sanuk in our lives

Sanuk is a Thai concept that can loosely be translated as meaning 'fun'. Though sanuk is in fact much more than that; it's about achieving pleasure and joy in all aspects of life. For Thai people, if it's not sanuk, it's not worth doing.
Thai people believe that it's the little things that add up to a joyful life. Whether it's raising happy kids, enjoying a quick chat with your neighbour or having a laugh with friends, they try to bring a sense of joy into their daily routines. This easygoing, fun-loving way of life is why Thailand is often called The Land of Smiles.
But how can we learn to prioritise this sense of fun and pleasure in our own lives? With recent clinical studies showing a clear link between a person's outlook on life and their health, a mindset of optimism and positivity has obvious benefits. Being a glass half full kind of person doesn't just help us live longer, it helps us live better.
Embracing sanuk and approaching life a glass-half-full attitude can make you happier, healthier and more productive - and this book will show you how.

The Little Coffee Shop of Terrors by Hazel Graves
English | 12 Sept. 2024 | ISBN: 000871892X | True EPUB | 384 pages | 0.6 MB
One new owner. One hot barista. And one seriously weird coffee shop...

Adele is down on her luck. She's just failed her last musical theatre, and it now looks like the bright lights of Broadway are behind her for good. So, when the opportunity comes up to take over a Brooklyn coffee shop, finally it feels like at last things are going her way.
The only issue is the coffee shop comes with strings attached in the form of one very grumpy (but roasting hot) barista, Ben. He's worked there for years and he's not about to move on just because there's a new owner in town.
But soon it's not only Ben who's smouldering, because strange things are happening with the old coffee roasting machine in the basement, with roaring flames and weird noises that seem to come from nowhere. She'd ask Ben for help, but he never seems to be around when there's a problem to fix. And to add to it all, now some of the regular customers are nowhere to be seen...
Trouble is brewing for Adele and, before she knows it, she's in a whole latte trouble...

Richard Sakwa, "The Lost Peace: How the West Failed to Prevent a Second Cold War"
English | ISBN: 0300255012 | 2023 | 448 pages | PDF | 1485 KB
The end of the Cold War was an opportunity-our inability to seize it has led to today's renewed era of great power competition

"An eloquent and persuasive argument about how the world squandered the promise of the end of the Cold War."-Maria Lipman, Foreign Affairs
The year 1989 heralded a unique prospect for an enduring global peace as harsh ideological divisions and conflicts began to be resolved. Now, three decades on, that peace has been lost. With war in Ukraine and increasing tensions between China, Russia, and the West, great power politics once again dominates the world stage. But could it have been different?
Richard Sakwa shows how the years before the first mass invasion of Ukraine represented a hiatus in conflict rather than a lasting accord-and how, since then, we have been in a "Second Cold War." Tracing the mistakes on both sides that led to the current crisis, Sakwa considers the resurgence of China and Russia and the disruptions and ambitions of the liberal order that opened up catastrophic new lines of conflict.
This is a vital, strongly argued account of how the world lost its chance at peace, and instead saw the return of war in Europe, global rivalries, and nuclear brinksmanship.

Mark Salter, "The Luckiest Man: Life with John McCain"
English | 2020 | pages: 608 | ISBN: 1982120932, 1982120940 | EPUB | 39,1 mb
A deeply personal and candid remembrance of the late Senator John McCain from one of his closest and most trusted confidants, friends, and political advisors.

More so than almost anyone outside of McCain's immediate family, Mark Salter had unparalleled access to and served to influence the Senator's thoughts and actions, cowriting seven books with him and acting as a valued confidant. Now, in The Luckiest Man, Salter draws on the storied facets of McCain's early biography as well as the later-in-life political philosophy for which the nation knew and loved him, delivering an intimate and comprehensive account of McCain's life and philosophy.
Salter covers all the major events of McCain's life-his peripatetic childhood, his naval service-but introduces, too, aspects of the man that the public rarely saw and hardly knew. Woven throughout this narrative is also the story of Salter and McCain's close relationship, including how they met, and why their friendship stood the test of time in a political world known for its fickle personalities and frail bonds.
Through Salter's revealing portrayal of one of our country's finest public servants, McCain emerges as both the man we knew him to be and also someone entirely new. Glimpses of his restlessness, his curiosity, his courage, and sentimentality are rendered with sensitivity and care-as only Mark Salter could provide. The capstone to Salter's intimate and decades-spanning time with the Senator, The Luckiest Man is the authoritative last word on the stories McCain was too modest to tell himself and an influential life not soon to be forgotten.

Anthony J. Parel, "The Machiavellian Cosmos"
English | ISBN: 0300051697 | | 216 pages | PDF | 19 MB
In this highly original interpretation of Machiavelli's thought, Anthony J. Parel identifies a theme generally neglected in the scholarship of this sixteenth-century political thinker: Machiavelli's belief in the occult forces of heaven and humors. Challenging the current tendency to view Machiavelli as a pioneer of modern political science, Parel argues instead that a premodern cosmology and anthropology underlie Machiavelli's political works. Parel shows that Machiavelli's world picture owes more to the astrological cosmology prevalent in the Renaissance than to the Aristotelian or Platonic or Christian world picture. This astrological determination significantly affects Machiavelli's conceptions of history, politics, and religion and shapes his notions of virtu and fortuna. It also has considerable impact on his ethical ideas: the Machiavellian cosmos has no room for a Ruling Mind or for the Sovereignty of the Good, and humans are left to pursue their appetites for riches and glory as best they can. In a similar fashion, says Parel Machiavelli's political anthropology is influenced by the ancient idea that body humors determine a person's temperament and behavior, for he believes that humors compromise human autonomy and rationality. According to Parel, the theory of humors also affects Machiavelli's view of the body politic and his characterization of republics, princedoms, and

Babak Amini, "The Making of Council Democracy: State Transformation and Radical Possibilities "
English | ISBN: 1032331968 | 2024 | 174 pages | EPUB, PDF | 1165 KB + 2 MB
"Council democracy" is a particular form of democratic socialism that strives towards democratic self-governance on the basis of active, free, and associated individuals working cooperatively within a federated council system. Both in political practice and in social theory, "council democracy" has resurfaced periodically in the past, most notably in the interwar period, in the "long 1960s," and since the turn of the 21st century. This book offers a novel theoretical and methodological approach to the study of "council democracy." It focuses on the processes that led to the emergence of two of the foundational and most radical instances of "council democratic" movements in Germany during the German Revolution (1918-1919) and in Italy during the biennio rosso (1919-1920). With all their diversities, ambiguities, and shortcomings, these movements, in varying degrees, sought democratic alternatives to autocratic relations, from local to state levels, and to economic relations, from workplace to national levels. The book shows how the processes through which state-led war mobilization transformed the contours of class struggle laid the ground for the emergence of "council democratic" movements with specific characteristics in Germany and Italy and not in the United Kingdom and France.

Cristina Stanciu, "The Makings and Unmakings of Americans: Indians and Immigrants in American Literature and Culture, 1879-1924 "
English | ISBN: 0300224354 | 2023 | 384 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Challenges the myth of the United States as a nation of immigrants by bringing together two groups rarely read together: Native Americans and Eastern European immigrants

In this cultural history of Americanization during the Progressive Era, Cristina Stanciu argues that new immigrants and Native Americans shaped the intellectual and cultural debates over inclusion and exclusion, challenging ideas of national belonging, citizenship, and literary and cultural production. Deeply grounded in a wide-ranging archive of Indigenous and new immigrant writing and visual culture-including congressional acts, testimonies, news reports, cartoons, poetry, fiction, and silent film-this book brings together voices of Native and immigrant America.
Stanciu shows that, although Native Americans and new immigrants faced different legal and cultural obstacles to citizenship, the challenges they faced and their resistance to assimilation and Americanization often ran along parallel paths. Both struggled against idealized models of American citizenship that dominated public spaces. Both participated in government-sponsored Americanization efforts and worked to gain agency and sovereignty while negotiating naturalization.
Rethinking popular understandings of Americanization, Stanciu argues that the new immigrants and Native Americans at the heart of this book expanded the narrow definitions of American identity.

The Many Lives of James Lovelock: Science, Secrets and Gaia Theory by Jonathan Watts
English | September 12th, 2024 | ISBN: 1805302876 | 320 pages | True EPUB | 4.04 MB
Based on over eighty hours of interviews with Lovelock and unprecedented access to his personal papers and scientific archive, Jonathan Watts has written a definitive and revelatory biography of a fascinating, sometimes contradictory man.

James Lovelock is best known as the father of Gaia Theory, the idea that life on Earth is a self-sustaining system in which organisms interact with their environments to maintain a habitable ecosystem.
Lovelock's life was a chronicle of twentieth-century science, and somehow he seemed to have a hand in much of it. During the Second World War he worked at the National Medical Research Institute, where his life-long interest in chemical tracing began. In the 1960s he worked at NASA. He worked for MI5 and MI6 during the Cold War. He was a science advisor to the oil giant Shell, who he warned as early as 1966 that fossil fuels were causing serious harm to the environment. He invented the technology that found the hole in the Ozone layer. And all of this shaped Gaia Theory - a theory that could not have been developed without the collaboration of two important women in his life.
Drawing together the many influences which shaped his life and thinking, The Many Lives of James Lovelock is a unique biography of one of the most fascinating scientists of the modern age.

Tony Maietta, "The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens: A Memoir of the Beales, the Maysles Brothers, and Jacqueline Kennedy"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 0999517708 | EPUB | pages: 254 | 2.3 mb
The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens is Jerry Torre's touching and at times haunting memoir about his teenage days as caretaker of Grey Gardens, the now-celebrated mansion chronicled in the iconic documentary Grey Gardens and two feature-length films. The book, co-written with film historian Tony Maietta, is a behind-the-scenes look at "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" and their bizarre and reclusive life of squalor amidst the tremendous wealth of East Hampton, the family bond that developed between Jerry and them, and the day everything was turned upside down forever with the arrival of documentary filmmakers Albert and David Maysles.

What begins as a teenager coming upon what he assumed was an old, abandoned house takes on new dimensions when suddenly Edie appears on the porch draped in a shower curtain with an apron tied around her head. "You must be the Marble Faun," she tells the stunned Jerry. Rather than chasing him away as he at first feared, she invites Jerry to meet her mother upstairs. So begins a strange and unusually close friendship with the two women as Jerry takes on the task of volunteer gardener of their estate, often sleeping nights in their living room and staying out of the way of mother-daughter arguments. The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens is Jerry's look back on the filming of Grey Gardens but also how the notoriety the movie achieved changed his life along with the Beales's as their private world is shared with audiences everywhere.

The Marcusean Mind is an outstanding survey and assessment of Marcuse's thought. Beginning with a thorough introduction to Marcuse's life and work, 39 chapters by an international and interdisciplinary team of contributors are organized into five clear parts:
