Susan Hekman, "The Material of Knowledge: Feminist Disclosures"
English | 2010 | pages: 161 | ISBN: 0253354676, 025322196X | PDF | 1,3 mb
Susan Hekman believes we are witnessing an intellectual sea change. The main features of this change are found in dichotomies between language and reality, discourse and materiality. Hekman proposes that it is possible to find a more intimate connection between these pairs, one that does not privilege one over the other. By grounding her work in feminist thought and employing analytic philosophy, scientific theory, and linguistic theory, Hekman shows how language and reality can be understood as an indissoluble unit. In this broadly synthetic work, she offers a new interpretation of questions of science, modernism, postmodernism, and feminism so as to build knowledge of reality and extend how we deal with nature and our increasingly diverse experiences of it.

The Melanin Millennium: Skin Color as 21st Century International Discourse By Ronald E. Hall (auth.), Ronald E. Hall (eds.)
2013 | 350 Pages | ISBN: 9400746075 | PDF | 5 MB
In the aftermath of the 60s "Black is Beautiful" movement and publication of The Color Complex almost thirty years later the issue of skin color has mushroomed onto the world stage of social science. Such visibility has inspired publication of the Melanin Millennium for insuring that the discourse on skin color meet the highest standards of accuracy and objective investigation. This volume addresses the issue of skin color in a worldwide context. A virtual visit to countries that have witnessed a huge rise in the use of skin whitening products and facial feature surgeries aiming for a more Caucasian-like appearance will be taken into account. The book also addresses the question of whether using the laws has helped to redress injustices of skin color discrimination, or only further promoted recognition of its divisiveness among people of color and Whites. The Melanin Millennium has to do with now and the future. In the 20th century science including eugenics was given to and dominated by discussions of race category. Heretofore there remain social scientists and other relative to the issue of skin color loyal to race discourse. However in their interpretation and analysis of social phenomena the world has moved on. Thus while race dominated the 20th century the 21st century will emerge as a global community dominated by skin color and making it the melanin millennium.

The Melting Point: High Command and War in the 21st Century by Kenneth F. McKenzie, James N. Mattis
English | May 28, 2024 | ISBN: 1682474496 | 360 pages | PDF | 30 Mb
As the Commander of U.S. Central Command, General Frank McKenzie oversaw some of the most important - and controversial operations in modern U.S. military history. He had direct operational responsibility for the strikes on Qassem Soleimani and two successive leaders of ISIS, the many months of deterrence operations against Iran and its proxies, and the methodical drawdown in Iraq. He directed the noncombatant evacuation operation in Afghanistan, and our final withdrawal from that tortured country.

The Melting Point has three themes. The first one is the importance of the primacy of civilian control of the military. It has become a widely perceived truth that this control has been eroded over the past few years. General McKenzie doesn't believe that to be the case, and he speaks with some authority on the matter arguing that the civ-mil relationship isn't perfect or frictionless, but it doesn't have to be, and probably shouldn't be. It is, however, more durable than many believe, and is supported and embraced by the military to a degree that some critics do not choose to recognize.
The second theme is the uniqueness of being a combatant commander. Combatant commanders participate in the development of policy, although as junior partners. They are also responsible for the execution of policy once civilian leaders have formulated their decision, a unique position, and very different than the role of a service chief, or even the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. None of these officers are in the chain of command, and they have no ultimate, mortal responsibility or authority for execution. Only the combatant commander stands astride the boundary of decision-making and execution.
Finally, the third theme that McKenzie argues is that leaders matter, and the decisions they make have a profound effect on what happens on the battlefield. McKenzie provides an honest assessment of his time in command-describing decisions that were sound, as well as some outcomes he wishes were different. He offers a vivid portrait of leadership in action in one of the most volatile regions of the world.

A playful collection of over 85 Vietnamese and Viet American dishes and immersive travel photography from Top Chef alum Tu David Phu that blends the Oakland native's modern culinary style with the food wisdom from his refugee family.

"Stripped of Oriental exoticism, this is a cookbook infused with theintense flavors of refugee kitchens and the inauthentic authenticity of the diaspora."-Viet Thanh Nguyen, author of Pulitzer Prize winner The Sympathizer
Tu David Phu trained in the nation's top restaurants only to realize the culinary lessons that truly impacted him were those passed on by his parents, refugees from Phú Quôc. In his hometown of Oakland, California, his parents taught him hard-won lessons in frugality, food-covery cooking, and practical gill-to-fin eating.
Centered around Tu's childhood memories in the diverse Bay Area and family stories of life on Phú Quốc island, The Memory of Taste explores the Phu family's ability to thrive and adapt from one coastal community to another. With tried-and-true tips like how to butcher a fish, tastebud-tingling flavor combinations, and stunning photographs, Tu guides both novice and experienced chefs alike in his take on Viet cooking, including:
* Staples in every Vietnamese kitchen like Cơm Tấm (Broken Rice), Dán Sả (Lemongrass Paste), and Nước Mắm Cham (Everyday Fish Sauce)
* Seafood dishes that utilize the less "desired" parts like Huyết Cá Tái Chanh (Tuna Bloodline Tartare), Canh Chua Đầu Cá Hồi (Hot Pot-style Salmon Head Sour Soup),and Xương Cá Hồi Ghiên Giòn (Fried Fish Frames)
* Fine-dining dishes from Tu's pop-up days like Gỏi Cuốn Cá Cornets, Mì Xào Tỏi Nấm Cục (Truffled Garlic Noodles), and Bánh Canh Carbonara
* Adapted recipes from new traditions like Bánh Ít Trần (Sticky Rice Dumplings), Cơm Cua Hấp (Dungeness Crab Donburi), and Phở Vịt Nướng (Roasted Duck Phở)
The Memory of Taste is Tu's story of returning to his roots and finding long-hidden culinary treasure. In his debut cookbook, Tu offers readers a chance to enjoy the bounty of his parents' lessons, just as he has.

The Mesmerist: A Novel by Caroline Woods
English | September 10, 2024 | ISBN: 0385550162 | True EPUB | 336 pages | 2.1 MB
A tightly Descriptionted page-turner ripped from the headlines of history, as three very different women must work together to stop a killer and save the truest home they've ever known.

Before hypnotism, there was Mesmerism. And in 1894 Minneapolis, in the wake of a national financial crisis, spiritualism of every stripe is all the rage, and women are dying under mysterious circumstances. But until a new guest lands at the Bethany Home for Unwed Mothers, refusing to speak or explain her arrival, the sordid stories of unexplained deaths seem unconnected. Faith's reticence is quickly interpreted as malevolence, setting the house abuzz with whispers of dark magic.
Abby, a staunch Quaker, lifelong supporter of progressive causes, and the Bethany Home's treasurer, thinks the rumors of mystical powers swirling around Faith are nonsense, but she recognizes the danger of a good story. Unwilling to allow the Home's important mission to be clouded by scandal, Abby tasks Faith's roommate, May, with tracing Faith's path to the Bethany Home.
May is desperate to end her year at Bethany Home engaged and on track to her happily-ever-after-even if her prince charming is Hal, a man she's not sure she can trust. She uncovers a Minneapolis she never expected as she begins digging into Faith's shadowy background, and her investigation brings her closer to polite society and Hal than she could have dreamed. The more May learns, the more she's forced to question the motives of everyone around her, including Abby and Faith, and as more women turn up dead, May must reevaluate the future she wants, and which lies she's willing to tell, for whom.
Rich with tension, suspicion, and sharply observed characters, Caroline Woods reimagines a classic American genre through the eyes of three bold, unforgettable women.

Benoit Mandelbrot, "The Misbehavior of Markets: A Fractal View of Financial Turbulence"
English | ISBN: 0465043577 | 2006 | 368 pages | PDF | 19 MB
A groundbreaking mathematician presents a new model for understanding financial markets

Benoit B. Mandelbrot is world-famous for inventing fractal geometry, making mathematical sense of a fact everybody knows but that geometers from Euclid on down had never assimilated: Clouds are not round, mountains are not cones, coastlines are not smooth. To these insights we can now add another example: Markets are not the safe bet your broker may claim.
Mandelbrot, with co-author Richard L. Hudson, shows how the dominant way of thinking about the behavior of markets-a set of mathematical assumptions a century old and still learned by every MBA and financier in the world-simply does not work. He uses fractal geometry to propose a new, more accurate way of describing market behavior. From the gyrations of the Dow to the dollar-euro exchange rate, Mandlebrot shows how to understand the volatility of markets in far more accurate terms than the failed theories that have repeatedly brought the financial system to the brink of disaster. The result is no less than the foundation for a new science of finance.

The Monk and the Philosopher : A Father and Son Discuss the Meaning of Life By Jean Francois Revel, Matthieu Ricard
1999 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 0805241620 | PDF | 9 MB
Jean Francois-Revel, a pillar of French intellectual life in our time, became world famous for his challenges to both Communism and Christianity. Twenty-seven years ago, his son, Matthieu Ricard, gave up a promising career as a scientist to study Tibetan Buddhism -- not as a detached observer but by immersing himself in its practice under the guidance of its greatest living masters.Meeting in an inn overlooking Katmandu, these two profoundly thoughtful men explored the questions that have occupied humankind throughout its history. Does life have meaning? What is consciousness? Is man free? What is the value of scientific and material progress? Why is there suffering, war, and hatred? Their conversation is not merely abstract: they ask each other questions about ethics, rights, and responsibilities, about knowledge and belief, and they discuss frankly the differences in the way each has tried to make sense of his life.Utterly absorbing, inspiring, and accessible, this remarkable dialogue engages East with West, ideas with life, and science with the humanities, providing wisdom on how to enrich the way we live our lives.

H. E. Baber, "The Multicultural Mystique: The Liberal Case Against Diversity"
English | ISBN: 1591025532 | 2008 | 260 pages | PDF | 14 MB
Most literature on multiculturalism assumes, without argument or compelling empirical evidence, that immigrants and members of ethnic minorities prefer to identify with their ancestral cultures. According to the received view, multiculturalism benefits ethnic minorities, who want to maintain distinct cultures and keep to themselves. And it protects them from the pressure to assimilate to the majority culture.Philosopher H. E. Baber scrutinizes these assumptions in this critique of the notion of multiculturalism. Baber asks whether it could be that many, or even most, members of ethnic minorities want to shed their ethnic identities and assimilate to the dominant culture. She suggests that multiculturalism imposes ethnic scripts on minorities and thus locks them out of the opportunity to assimilate. In effect, it becomes a form of ethnic stereotyping and discrimination. Multiculturalism, when transformed into an ideology as it often is, benefits cultural preservationists at the expense of members of ethnic minorities who wish to assimilate-arguably the majority. Perversely, it then labels those who would resist such stereotyping as atypical, inauthentic, or even self-hating. Baber argues that liberals, or anyone who favors the expansion of individual liberty, should reject a multiculturalism that restricts personal freedom by classifying and identifying people on the basis of unchosen characteristics such as ancestry and appearance. Like all Americans, ethnic minorities should be encouraged to "invent themselves," to affiliate with groups of their own choosing and be identified as they wish.

Youshaa Patel, "The Muslim Difference: Defining the Line between Believers and Unbelievers from Early Islam to the Present"
English | ISBN: 0300248962 | 2022 | 360 pages | PDF | 27 MB
A sweeping history of Muslim identity from its origins in late antiquity to the present

How did Muslims across time and place define the line between themselves and their neighbors? Youshaa Patel explores why the Prophet Muhammad first advised his followers to emulate Christians and Jews, but then allegedly reversed course, urging them to "be different!" He details how subsequent generations of Muslim scholars canonized the Prophet's admonition into an influential doctrine against imitation that enjoined ordinary believers to embody and display their religious difference in public life.
Tracing this Islamic discourse from its origins in Arabia to Mamluk and Ottoman Damascus, colonial Egypt, and beyond, this sweeping intellectual and social history offers a panoramic view of Muslim identity, revealing unexpected intersections between religion and other markers of difference across ethnicity, gender, and status. Patel illustrates that contemporary debates in the West over visible expressions of Islam, from headscarves and beards to minarets and mosques, are just the latest iterations in a long history of how small differences have defined Muslim interreligious encounters.

The Mysteries of Druidry: Celtic Mysticism, Theory & Practice by Brendan Cathbad Myers
English | June 23rd, 2023 | ISBN: 1564148785 | 240 pages | True EPUB | 5.07 MB
"A clear, accessible, and forthright exploration of Celtic tradition as the foundation of a personal path of mystical transformation." -John Michael Greer, former Grand Archdruid, Ancient Order of Druids in America, and author of The Druidry Handbook

The Druids were the mystics, philosophers, and magicians of the ancient Celtic world. Their spirituality was borne from their near-worship of poetry and music, their warrior prowess, and the world of nature. The Mysteries of Druidry reveals this mystical romanticism as it was in ancient times, and shows various ways to bring it to life today. It includes:
* A professionally researched survey of Druidic history, tradition, and customs
* Detailed descriptions of the mysteries of Celtic spirituality, including the Sacred Truth, the Great Marriage, the Hero's Journey, and the Otherworld
* Practical guidance for meditation and ceremony, for individuals and for groups
* The Celtic story of the creation of the world, presented together with a plan for re-enacting the story in ritual
"An exemplary look at one man's approach to Druidism, with excellent food for thought and suggestions for group ritual and personal practice... His personal stories of working with and discovering the spirits of the land are inspiring and useful guides to the readers." -Erynn Laurie, author of A Circle of Stones, cofounder of the Inis Glas Hedge School
"With gentle clarity, [Myers] writes not only of myth, folklore, and Celtic history, but also of and for our Celtic present. With his words, he inspires, calling the reader to breathe in the songs of the ancestors, and so to sing those songs with both a celebratory pride and a profound relevance for today." -Emma Restall Orr, Joint Chief of the British Druid Order; author of Kissing the Hag

Madeleine Boucher, "The Mysterious Parable "
English | ISBN: 1666780030 | 2023 | 112 pages | PDF | 26 MB
This monograph studies the parable as a literary construct. It addresses the question why the ancients understood parables as mysterious speech. The study disputes the binary opposition of (clear) parables and (obscure) allegories. Defining allegory as an extended metaphor in narratory form, it argues that many parables are allegories. The parable is defined as narrative in form; tropical in mode of meaning; religious or ethical in genre; and rhetorical in purpose, intended to persuade. Requiring (sometimes challenging) interpretation, the parable can rightly be considered "mysterious." The monograph then discusses the parable in the context of Mark's theme of mystery.

The Mystics Would Like a Word: Six Women Who Met God and Found a Spirituality for Today by Shannon K. Evans
English | September 10, 2024 | ISBN: 0593727274 | True EPUB | 208 pages | 5.2 MB
Discover a rich legacy of audacious women who forged a spirituality that is more inclusive, surprising, and empowering than we ever imagined.

Is there a Christian spirituality that embraces the entire reality of womanhood?
The answer, Shannon K. Evans suggests, is an emphatic yes. There is a spirituality that meets us in every part of our lives, developed by the women who came before us. Six mystics-Teresa of Ávila, Margery Kempe, Hildegard of Bingen, Julian of Norwich, Catherine of Siena, and Thérèse of Lisieux-revealed a faith big enough to hold the female experiences of sex and desire, the yearning for bodily autonomy, the challenges of motherhood and identity, as well as life with male authority and-sometimes-violence. These women, self-determining, stubborn, and unapologetically themselves, asked questions in their time that are startlingly prescient today, and fought for women's experiences to be heard, understood, respected, and recognized as holy.
In The Mystics Would Like a Word, readers will discover the story of Christian faith and spirituality as told by these extraordinary and wise women, one that speaks directly to today's unique experiences, and leads to wholeness, healing, and spiritual vitality.

The Myth of Making It: A Workplace Reckoning by Samhita Mukhopadhyay
English | June 18, 2024 | ISBN: 059344809X | 256 pages | PDF | 2.98 Mb
We can bury the girlboss, but what comes next? The former executive editor of Teen Vogue tells the story of her personal workplace reckoning and argues for collective responsibility to reimagine work as we know it.

"One of the smartest voices we have on gender, power, capitalist exploitation, and the entrenched inequities of the workplace."-Rebecca Traister, author of Good and Mad
"As I sat in the front row that day, I was 80 percent faking it with a 100-percent-real Gucci bag." Samhita Mukhopadhyay had finally made it: she had her dream job, dream clothes-dream life. But time and time again, she found herself sacrificing time with family and friends, paying too much for lattes, and limping home after working twelve hours a day. Success didn't come without costs, right? Or so she kept telling herself. And Mukhopadhyay wasn't alone: Far too many of us are taught that we need to work ourselves to the bone to live a good life. That we just need to climb up the corporate ladder, to "lean in" and "hustle," to enact change. But as Mukhopadhyay shows, these definitions of success are myths-and they are seductive ones.
Mukhopadhyay traces the origins of these myths, taking us from the sixties to the present. She forms a critical overview of workplace feminism, looking at stories from her own professional career, analysis from activists and experts, and of course, experiences of workers at different levels. As more individuals continue to question whether their professional ambitions can lead to happiness and fulfillment in the first place, Mukhopadhyay asks, What would it mean to have a liberated workplace? Mukhopadhyay emerges with a vision for a workplace culture that pays fairly, recognizes our values, and gives people access to the resources they need.
Acall to action to redefine and reimagine work as we know it, The Myth of Making It is a field guide and manifesto for all of us who are tired, searching for justice, and longing to be liberated from the oppressive grip of hustle culture.

The Names of Science: Terminology and Language in the History of the Natural Sciences
by Helge Kragh

English | 2024 | ISBN: 0198917457 | 353 pages | True PDF | 10.35 MB

The history of science is echoed in the development of its language and the names chosen for its technical terms. The Names of Science examines in detail how, over time, new words have entered the scientific lexicon and how some of them, but far from all, have survived to the present. Why is a transistor called a transistor and not something else? Why was the term 'scientist' only coined in 1834, and why was the name regarded as controversial for a long time afterwards? There is a story behind every scientific word we use today. In this work, Helge Kragh tells many of these stories, taking a broad historical perspective from the Renaissance to the present. By combining elements of linguistics with the history of the natural sciences including physics, chemistry, and astronomy, this book offers a new and innovative perspective on the historical development of the natural sciences. Following an introductory list of useful linguistic terms, the book is structured in six chapters, which cover important phases in the history of science, dealing with a vast range of scientific terminology from physics, chemistry, geology, astronomy, to cosmology. It also considers, if only briefly, how English - and not, say, Latin or French - developed to become the internationally accepted language of science. Contrary to other works dealing with the subject, The Names of Science pays serious attention to the historical dimension of scientific language, and to the way in which scientists have, sometimes unconsciously, acted as linguists and neologists in their research work.

Arthur Baudzus, "The Nazi: Coming of Age in Hitler's Germany and the Voyage of the U-859"
English | ISBN: 1932606130 | 2006 | 148 pages | PDF | 22 MB
Arthur Baudzus was ten when Hitler came to power and only 23 when the Nazi regime collapsed. In this fascinating memoir, Baudzus recalls what it was like growing up in those turbulent times. Exempt from conscription because of his job in a shipyard, Baudzus later joined the Navy and was posted to U-859 as an electrician for her six-month voyage from Kiel to the Japanese held Malayan port of Penang. U-859, and her cargo of mercury, was sunk by a torpedo from HMS Trenchant less than an hour from her destintion, and Baudzus had to swim up from the shattered hulk, then spent the next 24 hours floating in the Malacca Straits before being rescued by the Japanese. He was one of only 20 survivors.

The Need for Roots: Prelude to a Declaration of Obligations towards the Human Being (Penguin Classics) by Simone Weil, translated by Ros Schwartz
English | February 13, 2024 | ISBN: 0241467977 | True EPUB | 288 pages | 0.8 MB
French philosopher Simone Weil's best known work that promotes mindful living and instructs readers how they can once again feel rooted, in a cultural and spiritual sense, to their environment

One of the foremost French philosophers of the last century, Simone Weil has been described by André Gide as "the patron saint of all outsiders" and by Albert Camus as "the only great spirit of our time." In this, her most famous work, she diagnoses the malaise at the heart of modern life: uprootedness, from the past and from community. Written towards the end of World War II for the Free French Army, Weil's work is an indispensable and perpetually intriguing text for readers and students of philosophy everywhere.
The book discusses the political, cultural and spiritual currents that ought to be nurtured so that people have access to sources of energy which will help them lead fulfilling, joyful and morally good lives.

The Netherlands East Indies Campaign 1941-42: Japan's Quest for Oil (Campaign, 364) by Marc Lohnstein, Graham Turner
English | July 27, 2021 | ISBN: 1472843525 | 96 pages | MOBI | 23 Mb
At the end of 1941, Imperial Japan targeted The East Indies in an attempt to secure access to precious oil resources. The Netherlands East Indies Campaign featured complex Japanese and Allied operations, and included the first use of airborne troops in the war. This highly illustrated study is one of the less well-known campaigns of the Pacific War.

Imperial Japan's campaigns of conquest in late 1941/early 1942 were launched in order to achieve self-sufficiency for the Japanese people, chiefly in the precious commodity of oil. The Netherlands (or Dutch) East Indies formed one of Japan's primary targets, on account of its abundant rubber plantations and oilfields-the latter, in particular, was highly prized, given that the colony was the fourth-largest exporter of oil in the world. Japan itself lacked any form of domestic production.
The Japanese dispatched an enormous naval task force to support the amphibious landings over the vast terrain of the Netherlands East Indies. The combined-arms offensive was divided into three groups: western, center and eastern. Borneo was struck first in mid-December 1941, and assaults on Celebes, Amboin, Timor, Java, Sumatra, Ambon, and Dutch New Guinea followed. Allied forces in the NEI comprised British, Australian, Dutch, and American personnel. A combined theater headquarters (ABDACOM) was established on January 15 1942 in an effort to counter the Japanese offensives. The isolated airfields and oilfields were, however, picked off one by one by the Japanese, in the rush to secure the major islands before major Allied reinforcements arrived.
This superbly illustrated title describes the operational plans and conduct of the fighting by the major parties involved, and assesses the performance of the opposing forces on the battlefield, bringing to life an often-overlooked campaign of the Pacific War.

The New Frugality: How to Consume Less, Save More, and Live Better By Chris Farrell
2009 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 1596916605 | EPUB | 3 MB
From the personal finance correspondent for public radio's Marketplace Money, a new plan for a new economic reality-the philosophy and practice of living frugally. As a once-in-a-lifetime downturn deepens, our go-go economy has become an uh-oh economy. But as trusted finance reporter Chris Farrell explains, there's a silver lining to this cloud: It is accelerating a trend already under way in America toward what he calls the New Frugality-a fresh way of thinking about how, what, and why we consume. In today's economy, a "sustainable" lifestyle isn't just one that's good for the planet-it's one that is based around core values and one that sustains your bank balance as well.In this friendly, approachable book, Farrell explains both the theory and the practice of living frugally. Frugality, he reminds us, does not mean old-fashioned penny-pinching. It means spending your money on quality rather than quantity-buying the best you can afford but the least you need. Drawing on his expertise as a financial reporter and his years of conversations with his public radio listeners, he provides down-to-earth, practical advice for every aspect of your financial life, including: * how to always maintain a "margin of safety" in your spending * the frugal home: renting vs. owning * the two best ways to save for college * wise debt vs. foolish debt * why giving your money away can be "newly frugal" The New Frugality amounts to a paradigm shift in the way we spend and save. The good news is, a frugal lifestyle is one of less waste, lower environmental impact, greater peace of mind, and, over the long run, deeper satisfaction.
