How Painting Happens (and Why it Matters) by Martin Gayford
English | November 12, 2024 | ISBN: 0500027420 | True EPUB | 384 pages | 216 MB
Drawing on decades of conversations with practicing artists, Martin Gayford offers intimate insight into the practice, meaning, and potential of painting.

Painting is an almost inconceivably ancient activity that remains vigorously alive in the twenty-first century. Every successful painting creates a new world, which we inhabit for as long as we care to look at it. Paintings can incorporate profound ideas and paradoxes that can be grasped without words. For those who dedicate themselves to it, the art of painting can become an all-consuming, lifelong obsession. It is a subject on which painters themselves are often the most incisive commentators.
Martin Gayford's riveting and richly illustrated book deftly brings together numerous artists' voices, past and present. It draws on a trove of conversations conducted over more than three decades with artists including Frank Auerbach, Gillian Ayres, Frank Bowling, Cecily Brown, Peter Doig, Lucian Freud, Katharina Fritsch, David Hockney, Claudette Johnson, R. B. Kitaj, Lee Ufan, Paula Rego, Gerhard Richter, Bridget Riley, Jenny Saville, Frank Stella, Luc Tuymans, Zeng Fanzhi, and many more. Here too is Vincent van Gogh on Rembrandt, John Constable on Titian, Francis Bacon on Velázquez, Lee Krasner on Pollock, and Jean-Michel Basquiat on Picasso.
We hear the personal reflections of these artists on their chosen medium; how and why they paint; how they came to the practice; the influence of fellow painters; and how they find creative sustenance and inspiration in their art.
How Painting Happens crosses the centuries to give us a wealth of insights into the endlessly compelling phenomenon of painters and painting.

How the World Eats: A Global Food Philosophy by Julian Baggini
English | February 4, 2025 | ISBN: 1639368191 | True EPUB | 464 pages | 3.8 MB
From the bestselling author of How the World Thinks, an exploration of how we grow, make, buy and eat our food around the world-and a proposal for a global philosophy of food.

How we live is shaped by how we eat. You can see this in the vastly different approaches to growing, preparing and eating food around the world, such as the hunter-gatherer Hadza in Tanzania whose sustainable lifestyle is under threat in a crowded planet, or Western societies whose food is farmed or bred in vast intensive enterprises. And most of us now rely on a complex global food web of production, distribution, consumption and disposal, which is now contending with unprecedented challenges.
The need for a better understanding of how we feed ourselves has never been more urgent. In this wide-ranging and definitive book, philosopher Julian Baggini expertly delves into the best and worst food practises in a huge array of different societies, past and present. His exploration takes him from cutting-edge technologies, such as new farming methods, cultured meat, GM and astronaut food, to the ethics and health of ultra processed food and aquaculture, as he takes a forensic look at the effectiveness of our food governance, the difficulties of food wastage and the effects of commodification.
Extracting essential principles to guide how we eat in the future, How the World Eats is a thought-provoking and illuminating call for a pluralistic, humane, resourceful and equitable global food philosophy that will guide us towards a food system fit for the twenty-first century and beyond.

How to Be Queer: An Ancient Guide to Sexuality
by Sarah Nooter
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0691248613 | 264 Pages | AZW3 | 0.44 MB

An irresistible anthology of ancient Greek writings that explore queer desire and love
Eros, limb-loosening, whirls me about again,
that bittersweet, implacable creature.
-Sappho
The idea of sexual fluidity may seem new, but it is at least as old as the ancient Greeks, who wrote about queer experiences with remarkable frankness, wit, and insight. How to Be Queer is an infatuating collection of these writings about desire, love, and lust between men, between women, and between humans and gods, in lucid and lively new translations. Filled with enthralling stories, this anthology invites readers of all sexualities and identities to explore writings that describe many kinds of erotic encounters and feelings, and that envision a playful and passionate approach to sexuality as part of a rich and fulfilling life.
How to Be Queer starts with Homer's Iliad and moves through lyric poetry, tragedy, comedy, philosophy, and biography, drawing on a wide range of authors, including Sappho, Plato, Anacreon, Pindar, Theognis, Aristophanes, and Xenophon. It features both beautiful poetry and thought-provoking prose, emotional outpourings and humorous anecdotes. From Homer's story of the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus, one of the most intense between men in world literature, to Sappho's lyrics on the pleasures and pains of loving women, these writings show the many meanings of what the Greeks called eros.
Complete with brief introductions to the selections, and with the original Greek on facing pages, How to Be Queer reveals what the Greeks knew long ago-that the erotic and queer are a source of life and a cause for celebration.

How to Fast: Rediscover the Ancient Practice for Unlocking Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Renewal by Reward Sibanda
English | February 11, 2025 | ISBN: 0593601351 | True EPUB | 208 pages | 2.3 MB
Discover the holistic and revelatory experience of fasting in this seminal guide on the practice, science, and ancient context of the biblical tradition-with a foreword by John Mark Comer, New York Times bestselling author of Practicing the Way and The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry.

We've forgotten how to fast, and it has not only cost us the potency of our prayers and profound benefits to our bodies but has ultimately disconnected us from a practice essential to the faith of the early saints and to our Lord Jesus Himself. While fasting is often dismissed as just another diet trend, Pastor Reward Sibanda clarifies what true spiritual fasting is-and what it is not. He explains why we should fast and how to biblically fast so we can experience deeper communion with God.
Sibanda draws from his own twenty-one-day fasting experiences, engaging anecdotes, Scripture, and scientific insights to reveal how fasting, when accurately and prayerfully practiced,
* engages the soul, serves the spirit, and benefits the body
* resets our biological rhythms and increases our physical well-being, even to the cellular level
* is the most holistically transformative experience a Christian can undertake
Whether you're new to fasting or a seasoned practitioner, this book-which includes a daily fasting guide-provides invaluable insights that will renew your relationship with God and enrich your faith. Discover for yourself this life-changing gift!

How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds Or Less By Nicholas Boothman
2000 | 160 Pages | ISBN: 076111940X | EPUB | 1 MB
Whether selling, managing, negotiating, planning, collaborating, pitching, instructing-or on your knees with a marriage proposal-the secret of success is based on connecting with other people. Now that connection is infinitely easier to make through Nicholas Boothman's program of rapport by design. How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less is the work of a master of Neuro-Linguistic Programming whose career is teaching corporations and groups the secrets of successful face-to-face communication. Aimed at establishing rapport-that stage between meeting and communicating-How to Make People Like You focuses on the concept of synchrony. It shows how to synchronize attitude, synchronize body language, and synchronize voice tone so that you instantly and imperceptibly become someone the other person likes. Reinforcing these easy-to-learn skills is knowing how to read the other person's sensory preferences-most of us are visual, some are kinesthetic, and a minority are auditory. So when you say "I see what you mean" to a visual person, you're really speaking his language. Along the way the book covers attitude, nervousness, words that open a conversation and words that shut it down, compliments, eye cues, the magic of opposites attracting, and more. It's how to make the best of the most important 90 seconds in any relationship, business or personal.

Aaron Schuster, "How to Research Like a Dog: Kafka's New Science "
English | ISBN: 0262543540 | 2024 | 352 pages | PDF | 3 MB
A provocative book that proposes a new and surprising inspiration for philosophy today-the canine thinker from Kafka's story "Investigations of a Dog."

Written toward the end of Kafka's life, "Investigations of a Dog" (Forschungen eines Hundes, 1922) is one of the lesser-known and most enigmatic works in the author's oeuvre. Kafka's tale of philosophical adventure is that of a lone, maladjusted dog who challenges the dogmatism of established science and pioneers an original research program in pursuit of the mysteries of his self and his world. In How to Research Like a Dog, Aaron Schuster uses the canine as a guide dog to rediscover Kafka's fictional universe, while taking up the cause of this ingenious, possessed, melancholy, comical, and revolutionary thinker.
Neither an exercise in literary criticism nor a traditional philosophical commentary, this charming and idiosyncratic book aligns itself with the research program of Kafka's dog. It constructs an "impossible" system based on the fourfold division of nourishment, music, incantation, and freedom-or, stated a bit differently: enjoyment, art, institutions, and freedom. From Plato to Flaubert, Lispector, and Lacan, Schuster puts the dog in dialogue with psychoanalytic theory, the history of philosophy, and modern literature. Imagining the "Unknown University" that Kafka's new science calls for, the book enlists new comrades in the dog's struggle.

How to Run an Indie Label
by Alan McGee
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1644283786 | 320 Pages | True ePUB | 0.76 MB

How To Run an Indie Label tells you everything you need to know about how to be a creative force.
Music is like no other business. It's about being at the right place at the right time, following your nose and diving in feet first. It's about being plugged into the mystical electricity and about surfing on the wild energy. It's about how to fuck up and how to survive and be sustained by the holy grail of the high decibel. No-one captures this wild feral spirit better than Alan McGee whose helter skelter career through music has made him a major force. Wilder than his bands, more out of control than his most lunatic singer, more driven than his contemporaries and closer in spirit to the rock n roll star he could never be himself, McGee was always in a rush. Creation would sign people and not just the music. McGee understood that running an indie label is mainly about the charisma, the game changers, the iconography and the story. It's about never being boring. His ability to start a raw power ruckus brought the visceral danger back to a moribund mid-eighties music scene. His nose for danger and his ear for classic guitar rock n roll brought us Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Teenage Fan Club and Ride before topping out in the nineties with the biggest band in the world, Oasis. By no means a conventional instruction manual or business book How To Run an Indie Label tells you everything you need to know about how to be a creative force.

How to Sell Out: The (Hidden) Cost of Being a Black Writer by Chad Sanders
English | February 4, 2025 | ISBN: 1982190833 | True EPUB | 256 pages | 2.6 MB
A timely, vulnerable, and cutting-edge exploration of the pressures and pitfalls of writing while Black in America in this urgently needed addition to the national conversation of race, money, and art.

In the summer of 2020, when the nation was erupting in protest over the murder of George Floyd, Chad Sanders was quietly celebrating for selfish reasons. Why? After years of struggling to get his footing as a writer, he'd finally landed a New York Times op-ed. He wrote an essay about the hollow messages of concern he'd been receiving from white friends and colleagues. It went viral, and in the years that followed, he built a solid career as a creator-of books, podcasts, TV shows, and films-by mining his most painful experiences of being Black in America.
Black pain for white money. For Sanders, this was a lucrative trade. One he thought he could work for the rest of his life. But it didn't take long for him to realize he, like so many other writers, was getting the short end of the stick.
In How to Sell Out, Sanders draws on his personal experiences to offer a wry, darkly comic look at the invisible realities of making a living as a Black writer who writes about race. He relays stories of his time in the tech business, his experiences in TV writers' rooms, his childhood participation in Jack and Jill, his family and relationships, and the struggles of sharing his racial trauma in exchange for cash. Combining meditations on historical and current events and the intersection of race and class with short creative essays, Sanders sculpts a freewheeling arc that is as funny as it is moving and thought-provoking.

How to Share an Egg: A True Story of Hunger, Love, and Plenty by Bonny Reichert
English | January 21, 2025 | ISBN: 0593599160 | True EPUB | 304 pages | 3.4 MB
A moving culinary memoir about the relationship between food and family-sustenance and survival-from a chef, award-winning journalist, and daughter of a Holocaust survivor.

"Beautifully written, heartbreaking and hopeful."-Ruth Reichl, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Novel
When you're raised by someone who once survived on potato peels and coffee grounds, you develop a pretty healthy respect for food.
Bonny Reichert avoided everything to do with the Holocaust until she found herself, in midlife, suddenly typing those words into an article she was writing. The journalist had grown up hearing stories about her father's near-starvation and ultimate survival in Auschwitz-Birkenau, but she never imagined she would be able to face this epic legacy head-on.
Then a chance encounter with a perfect bowl of borscht in Warsaw set Bonny on a journey to unearth her culinary lineage, and she began to dig for the roots of her food obsession, dish by dish. Stepping into the kitchen to connect her past with her future, the author recounts the defining moments of her life in a poignant tale of scarcity and plenty: her colorful childhood in the restaurant business, the crumbling of her first marriage and the intensity of young motherhood, her decision to become a chef, and that life-altering visit to Poland. Whether it's the flaky potato knishes and molasses porridge bread she learned to bake at her baba Sarah's elbow, the creamy vichyssoise she taught herself to cook in her tiny student apartment, or the brown butter eggs her father, now 93, still scrambles for her whenever she needs comfort, cuisine is both an anchor and an identity; a source of joy and a signifier of survival.
How to Share an Egg is a journey of deep flavors and surprising contrasts. By turns sweet, salty, sour, and bitter, this is one woman's search to find her voice as a writer, chef, mother, and daughter. Do the tiny dramas of her own life matter in comparison to everything her father has seen and done? This moving exploration of heritage, inheritance, and self-discovery sets out to find the answer.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart, and lean not upon thine own understanding: In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. - Proverbs 3:5-6 "I have for years felt the need of a book to put in the hands of those beginning the Christian life that would tell them just how to make a complete success of this new life upon which they were entering. I could find no such book, so I have been driven to write one. This book aims to tell the young convert just what he most needs to know. I hope that pastors and evangelists and other Christian workers may find it a good book to put in the hands of young converts. How to Teach Reading to the Net Generation Children: How to Teach Reading for Those who Do Not Want to Read By Viktors Vrublevskis
2015 | 41 Pages | ISBN: 395489226X | PDF | 1 MB
The present research consists of 45 pages, 4 chapters, 5 subchapters, 6 tables, 6 figures and 6 appendices. The author of the paper has analysed different kinds of literature, such as scientific research and publications, scientific and course books referred to the teaching reading methods and the best approaches. In his practical part of this research the author has tried to implement the most effective methods and approaches into practise. All the author's successes and failures are described, analysed and taken into consideration in this research. The author of the paper has chosen teaching reading topic because he discovered evident contradiction between a comparatively great number of English lessons: qualitative course books on one hand, and apparently poor reading skills on the other hand in elementary school. The main, positive conclusion of the research is that variations of teaching methods considerably improve reading skills, but this regularity does not always apply to the children that are having different psychological problems like shyness, diffidence, fear. At the same time a poor ability to make conclusion and poor vocabulary is the main cause of weak language comprehension and lacking reading skills.

Luke Ahmed, "How To Think Like A Manager for the CISSP Exam"
English | ISBN: 1735085197 | 2020 | 66 pages | MOBI | 2 MB
"How do you think like a manager?" It is one of the most common questions asked when preparing for the CISSP exam. Using 25 CISSP practice questions with detailed explanations, this book will attempt to answer how to think like a member of a senior management team who has the goal of balancing risk, cost, and most of all, human life. The questions will take you through how to resist thinking from a technical perspective to one that is more holistic of the entire organization. Like all of Study Notes and Theory's CISSP practice questions, these questions correlate multiple high-level security concepts and require thinking like a manager. Extracting the most value comes from understanding not only which choice is correct, but more importantly, why the other choices are wrong.
