Saint Augustine and the Fall of the Soul: Beyond O'Connell and His Critics By Ronnie J. Rombs

Augustine's understanding of the origin of the soul and the nature of its fall looms as one of the most important and controversial questions among Augustinian scholars since Robert J. O'Connell first began publishing on the topic. O'Connell argued that Augustine embraced Descriptioninus's doctrine that the soul existed before the body and only fell into bodily life as the result of sin. Such a position, however, is fundamentally incompatible with Christian anthropology: bodily life is intrinsically corrupted; physical existence is regrettable. The supposition that the most influential Christian theologian after St. Paul maintained such a position generated sharp division between scholars who were convinced by O'Connell and those who were not. A scholarly consensus on the subject has not yet developed. provides first a critical examination of O'Connell's theses in a readable summary of his work that spanned over thirty years. Secondly, a diachronic study of Augustine's writings traces the development of his understanding of the soul's fall, mapping the limits of Descriptioninus's influence. The study recognizes the extent to which Augustine embraced Descriptioninus's ontology and anthropology and the point at which he abandoned Descriptioninus. The young Augustine was significantly influenced by Descriptioninus, and there is substantial evidence that he held a Descriptioninian doctrine of the soul's fall. But as the anthropological implications that follow from the Christian doctrine of creation ex nihilo became apparent to him, Augustine departed from Descriptioninus. Augustine ultimately took the soul's fall to be a moral lapse, retaining Descriptioninus's imagery vocabulary as a way of expressing a psychology of sin, not an ontological fall. Augustinian scholars and students in theology and patristics will find the text an invaluable resource on the topic.

In doing so, they established Southern California as the national reference point for shoreline planning and coastal access. As they opened up vast public spaces for many Angelenos to express themselves, show off their bodies, and forge alternative communities, they made clear that certain groups of beachgoers, including African Americans, gay men and women, and bodybuilders, were no longer welcome. Despite their artificial origins, LA's beaches have proved remarkably resilient. The drastic human interventions into nature brought social and economic benefits to the region without long-term detrimental consequences on the environment. Yet the ongoing climate crisis and rapid sea level rise will eventually force the city to reckon with its past building.

Verschenkt der Überlebende sein Vermögen zu Lebzeiten, so wird der Vertragserbe beim Erbvertrag über die §§ 2287, 2288 BGB geschützt. Im Vordergrund stehen hierbei die Bindungswirkungen beider Rechtsinstitute. Die historischen Ergebnisse stärken die herrschende Meinung und widerlegen die kritischen Stimmen jüngster Zeit.Sticherling stellt dem Berliner Testament den Erbvertrag mit Rücktrittsvorbehalt an die Seite. Er kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass nicht nur historische Argumente für eine Gleichbehandlung sprechen und ist der Ansicht, dass sich bei Wahl des richtigen Vergleichsobjekts kaum noch Unterschiede zeigen.Schließlich geht der Autor über die herrschende Meinung hinaus, die die §§ 2287, 2288 BGB erst nach dem Tod des Erstversterbenden analog anwenden will. Er schließt sich einer im Vordringen befindlichen Meinung an, wonach die §§ 2287, 2288 BGB - unter bestimmten Umständen - Schenkungen zu Lebzeiten beider Ehegatten erfassen sollen. Er geht noch einen Schritt weiter und fordert unter Berücksichtigung der historischen Erkenntnisse eine generelle Anwendung der §§ 2287, 2288 BGB zu Lebzeiten beider Ehegatten.
