Zugleich bedarf sie dabei aber stets der Organisation, um wirklich werden zu können - der Organisation von Herrschaft, die ihrerseits gleichfalls den Ausgang nur in der gleichen Freiheit der einzelnen suchen kann. In der abendländischen Geistesgeschichte steht individuelle Freiheit so am Anfang wie am Ende der Frage nach der Legitimation von Recht. Der demokratische Rechtsstaat versucht, das daraus resultierende Spannungsverhältnis zwischen der Freiheit des einzelnen und dem Mehrheitsprinzip auszugleichen.Beide Pole in ein Verhältnis zu setzen, war von Anfang an auch ein Anliegen Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenfördes. Ihm zu Ehren haben aus Anlaß seines 75. Geburtstages seine Schülerinnen und Schüler auf einem Symposium das schwierige Verhältnis zwischen Freiheit des Subjekts und Organisation von Herrschaft mit Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde diskutiert. Die Schriftfassungen der dort diskutierten Vorträge haben Eingang in dieses Beiheft gefunden.

Die zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts aus Arzneipflanzen isolierten Alkaloide waren hochwirksame Stoffe und zugleich Modelle für die Entwicklung synthetischer Arzneistoffe. Morphin, 1804/05 von Friedrich Wilhelm Sertürner (1783-1841) als erstes Alkaloid entdeckt, ist ein starkes Schmerzmittel (Analgetikum). Seine Entdeckungsgeschichte kann anhand der hier abgedruckten und erläuterten Veröffentlichungen Sertürners minutiös nachverfolgt werden. Morphin zeigte als Wirkstoff des Opiums (principium somniferum) eine schlafbringende Wirkung) und Sertürner stellte fest, dass es sich bei diesem Stoff um eine Pflanzenbase (Alkaloid) handelt. Heroische Selbstversuche zeigten, dass bereits mit geringsten Mengen eine große Wirkung erzeugt werden kann. Das Buch schildert Leben und Werk Sertürners. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Apotheker des 18./19. Jahrhunderts, der mit seiner Morphin-Entdeckung ein neues Forschungsgebiet begründete und den Weg in die moderne Arzneimittelforschung wies.
