English | 2014 | ISBN: 1626196222, 1540211045 | EPUB | pages: 128 | 4.3 mb
The memorable architecture and fine cigars of Ybor City attract and delight visitors, but locals and tourists aren't the only ones prowling the city's narrow brick streets and old nightclubs. Invisible revelers still linger at sites like the Florida Brewing Company, where Eduardo Sandoval seeks revenge from the drunken brawl that killed him in 1896. Jose Marti himself still fights by night for Cuba's liberation in Parque Amigos de Jose Marti on Eighth Avenue. Grab a Cuban sandwich or a cafe con leche and join local historian Deborah Frethem as she traces the spectral happenings of Florida's Latin Quarter.

Healing Perception: An Application of the Philosophy of Merleau-Ponty to the Theoretical Structures of Dialogic Psychotherapy by Desmond J. Kennedy
English | February 3, 2013 | ASIN: B00BAZ0HEI, ISBN: 1480085022 | True AZW3 | 344 pages | 0.4 MB
This work is an attempt to root Gestalt therapy - its theory and practice, in the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961). It is not an attempt to fix this wonderfully versatile therapy in concrete or to subtract anything of its existential openness from it, but to give it a foundation and a philosophical framework from which it can operate and develop. Its point of departure is the wonderful, even awesome, gratuity of one's being: 'I am given to myself'."

is a contemporary guide to the health service, its origins and current agenda, which focuses on the challenges faced by health service workers in implementing government policy at local level. The book′s aim is to help health care professionals make assessments of health policy by giving them an understanding of the ideological basis of the British health care system and the challenges facing the modern National Health Service.
Beginning with the development of the NHS and its place within the broader context of state welfare provision, the book looks at the options available to governments in formulating policy which responds to health needs. It examines the policies set by recent governments and the feasibility of achieving objectives set by the current NHS Plan. Looking to the future, the book also identifies key issues for health policy in the next decade.
Recognizing the reality of working in today′s NHS, the authors highlight the tension which often exists between the formation and implementation of health policy. The central concern of policy makers to act for the collective good frequently creates problems for practitioners trying to align services with individual patient need and choice.
Health Policy for Health Care Professionals is an ideal text for anyone training for a career in the NHS and an excellent resource for qualified practitioners assessing and implementing policy.

Healthcare Overview: New Perspectives By Vincenzo Costigliola (auth.), Vincenzo Costigliola (eds.)
2012 | 522 Pages | ISBN: 9400746016 | PDF | 7 MB
In healthcare, the realisation of an optimistic prognosis against pessimistic ones depends on current innovations in diagnostic and cost-effective treatment approaches being widely adopted in clinical practice. Utilisation of advanced early and predictive diagnostics, targeted prevention and personalised medical approaches could enable the elderly subpopulation to reach the 100-year age limit in good physical and mental health, as actively contributing members of society. This task requires intelligent political regulations and creation of new guidelines to advance current healthcare systems. In this book, we will collect contributions from several geopolitical regions of Europe, Asia and USA that provide expert opinion on healthcare organisation and outlook as well as economical aspects of personalised medicine.

On Barak, "Heat, a History: Lessons from the Middle East for a Warming Planet"
English | ISBN: 0520403924 | 2024 | 336 pages | PDF | 49 MB
Shifts the conversation from abstract "global warming" to the deeply human impacts of heat-and how our efforts to keep cool have made the problem worse.

Despite the flames of record-breaking temperatures licking at our feet, most people fail to fully grasp the gravity of environmental overheating. What acquired habits and conveniences allow us to turn a blind eye with an air of detachment? Using examples from the hottest places on earth, Heat, a History shows how scientific methods of accounting for heat and modern forms of acclimatization have desensitized us to climate change.
Ubiquitous air conditioning, shifts in urban planning, and changes in mobility have served as temporary remedies for escaping the heat in hotspots such as the twentieth-century Middle East. However, all of these measures have ultimately fueled not only greenhouse gas emissions but also a collective myopia regarding the impact of rising temperatures. Identifying the scientific, economic, and cultural forces that have numbed our responses, this book charts a way out of short-term thinking and towards meaningful action.

Hebrew Bible/Old Testament: Torah By Irmtraud Fischer, Mercedes Navarro Puerto, Andrea Taschl-Erber
2011 | 492 Pages | ISBN: 1589835646 | PDF | 11 MB
This volume is the first in The Bible and Women series. It presents a history of the reception of the Bible as embedded in Western cultural history with a special focus on the history of women and issues of gender. It introduces the series, explaining the choice of the Hebrew canon in connection with the Christian tradition and preparing the way for a changed view of women throughout the series. The contributors explore the gendered significance of the canonical writings as well as the process of their canonization and the social-historical background of ancient Near Eastern women's lives, both of which play key roles in the series. Turning to the Pentateuch, essays address a variety of texts and issues still relevant today, such as creation and male-female identity in the image of God, women's roles in the genealogies of the Pentateuch and in salvation history, the rights and responsibilities of women according to the Hebrew Bible's legal and ritual texts, and how archaeology and iconography can illustrate the texts of the Torah. Contributors include Sophie Démare-Lafont, Dorothea Erbele-Küster, Karin Finsterbusch, Irmtraud Fischer, Mercedes García Bachmann, Thomas Hieke, Carol Meyers, Mercedes Navarro Puerto, Jorunn Økland, Ursula Rapp, Donatella Scaiola, Silvia Schroer, Jopie Siebert-Hommes, and Adriana Valerio.

Wei Zhang, "Heidegger, Rorty, And the Eastern Thinkers: A Hermeneutics of Cross-cultural Understanding "
English | ISBN: 0791467511 | 2006 | 127 pages | PDF | 623 KB
Wei Zhang joins the ongoing hermeneutic quest for understanding and appropriating the East-West encounter and cross-cultural engagement by exploring Martin Heidegger's and Richard Rorty's cross-cultural encounters with Eastern thinkers. Zhang begins by examining Rorty's correspondence with Indian philosopher Anindita N. Balslev, outlining their debate about the discipline of comparative philosophy and curriculum reform, as well as the nature or origin of philosophy itself. She then focuses on the dialogue between Heidegger and a Japanese professor concerning the nature of human language and discusses whether Heidegger's view of language allows for a true understanding between East and West or whether it admits only misunderstanding and prejudice are possible. Finally, the author presents a conceptual dialogue with Heidegger's primary text on hermeneutics and phenomenology, Ontology-The Hermeneutics of Facticity. Utilizing the dialogues and correspondence between Heidegger, Rorty, and the Eastern thinkers as textual examples, Zhang deconstructs and recovers layers of misconceptions of the various interpretations of the East-West encounter.

Helicobacter pylori and Gastric Cancer (Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology, 444) by Steffen Backert
English | January 18, 2024 | ISBN: 3031473302 | 333 pages | MOBI | 8.61 Mb
This volume explores in detail the molecular biology, genetics and immunology of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori that causes serious gastric diseases such as gastric cancer. The book provides in-depth insights into the mechanisms of H. pylori-induced pathogenicity, gives an overview of how the bacterium colonizes the human gut, how it manages to persist in the body and which factors play a role in the development of H. pylori-induced gastric cancer. Furthermore, the interaction between the Gram-negative bacterium and the human gut microbiome is explored, and clinical management and treatment strategies to combat gastric cancer are discussed.

Helicobacter pylori is an extremely successful pathogen that persistently colonizes the gut of about 50% of the world's population. H. pylori and its human host share a long co-evolutionary relationship that dates back for at least last 100,000 years and possibly longer. Infection by thisbacterium is a high-risk factor for the development of gastric diseases, including gastric cancer. Gastric cancer is associated with high morbidity and mortality and represents the 5th most common malignant tumour and the 4th leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. H. pylori is the first bacterium that has been classified as a type-I carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Recent research progress identified crucial bacterial, host and environmental factors which control H. pylori-induced gastric malignancy. New studies also suggest that specific human germline mutations and other genetic aberrations have an important impact on H. pylori-induced pathology. In this volume, all these recently discovered mechanisms are reviewed in the light of gastric cancer development, and H. pylori epidemiology, virulence factors, immune evasion, pathophysiology, cancer signalling and novel therapeutic protocols are presented.
This volume is aimed at researchers in the fields of immunology, genetics, microbiology and medicine who are interested in the detailed mechanisms of the pathogenicity of this carcinogenic stomach bacterium.

Meghan R. Henning, "Hell Hath No Fury: Gender, Disability, and the Invention of Damned Bodies in Early Christian Literature "
English | ISBN: 0300223110 | 2021 | 288 pages | PDF | 1416 KB
The first major book to examine ancient Christian literature on hell through the lenses of gender and disability studies

"Enthralling, engaging, and challenging. . . . [Henning] has successfully given hell the right sort of attention, at last filling a major gap in the story and simultaneously charting new territory."-Jarel Robinson-Brown, Los Angeles Review of Books
Throughout the Christian tradition, descriptions of hell's fiery torments have shaped contemporary notions of the afterlife, divine justice, and physical suffering. But rarely do we consider the roots of such conceptions, which originate in a group of understudied ancient texts: the early Christian apocalypses.
In this pioneering study, Meghan Henning illuminates how the bodies that populate hell in early Christian literature-largely those of women, enslaved persons, and individuals with disabilities-are punished after death in spaces that mirror real carceral spaces, effectually criminalizing those bodies on earth. Contextualizing the apocalypses alongside ancient medical texts, inscriptions, philosophy, and patristic writings, this book demonstrates the ways that Christian depictions of hell intensified and preserved ancient notions of gender and bodily normativity that continue to inform Christian identity.

Henry V: The Astonishing Rise of England's Greatest Warrior King by Dan Jones
English | September 12th, 2024 | ISBN: 1804541931, 1035910810 | 464 pages | True EPUB | 27.40 MB
A brand-new life of England's greatest king from our bestselling medieval historian

'A historian who writes as addictively as any page-turning novelist.' Observer
Henry V reigned over England for only nine years and four months, and died at the age of just 35, but he looms over the landscape of the late Middle Ages and beyond.
The victor of Agincourt was a model king for his successors. Shakespeare's version of Henry V saw his youthful folly redirected to sober statesmanship, and in the dark days of World War II, Henry's victories in France were recounted in British propaganda. Churchill called Henry 'a gleam of splendour in the dark, troubled story of medieval England', while for one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, 'the greatest man who ever ruled England'.
For Dan Jones, Henry is one of the most intriguing characters in all medieval history, but one of the hardest to pin down. He was a hardened, sometimes brutal, warrior, yet he was also creative and artistic, with a bookish temperament. He was a leader who made many mistakes, who misjudged his friends and family members, yet always seemed to triumph when it mattered.
As king, he saved a shattered country from economic ruin, put down rebellions and secured England's borders; in foreign diplomacy, he made England a serious player once more. Yet through his conquests in northern France, he sowed the seeds for three generations of calamity at home, in the form of the Wars of the Roses.
Dan Jones's life of Henry V provides unprecedented insight into the critical first 26 years of his life before he became king. Both a standalone biography and a completion of Dan's sequence of English medieval histories that began with The Plantagenets and The Hollow Crown, Henry V is a thrilling and unmissable life of England's greatest king from our best-selling medieval historian.

Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles By Geoff Emerick, Howard Massey
2007 | 400 Pages | ISBN: 1592402690 | EPUB | 4 MB
Geoff Emerick became an assistant engineer at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in 1962 at age fifteen, and was present as a new band called the Beatles recorded their first songs. He later worked with the Beatles as they recorded their singles "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand," the songs that would propel them to international superstardom. In 1964 he would witness the transformation of this young and playful group from Liverpool into professional, polished musicians as they put to tape classic songs such as "Eight Days A Week" and "I Feel Fine." Then, in 1966, at age nineteen, Geoff Emerick became the Beatles' chief engineer, the man responsible for their distinctive sound as they recorded the classic album Revolver, in which they pioneered innovative recording techniques that changed the course of rock history. Emerick would also engineer the monumental Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road albums, considered by many the greatest rock recordings of all time. In Here, There and Everywhere he reveals the creative process of the band in the studio, and describes how he achieved the sounds on their most famous songs. Emerick also brings to light the personal dynamics of the band, from the relentless (and increasingly mean-spirited) competition between Lennon and McCartney to the infighting and frustration that eventually brought a bitter end to the greatest rock band the world has ever known.

Jose Maria Perez Fernandez, "Hernando Colon's New World of Books: Toward a Cartography of Knowledge"
English | ISBN: 0300230419 | 2021 | 344 pages | PDF | 7 MB
The untold story of the greatest library of the Renaissance and its creator Hernando Colón

This engaging book offers the first comprehensive account of the extraordinary projects of Hernando Colón, son of Christopher Columbus, which culminated in the creation of the greatest library of the Renaissance, with ambitions to be universal--that is, to bring together copies of every book, on every subject and in every language. Pérez Fernández and Wilson‑Lee situate Hernando's projects within the rapidly changing landscape of early modern knowledge, providing a concise history of the collection of information and the origins of public libraries, examining the challenges he faced and the solutions he devised. The two authors combine "meticulous research with deep and original thought," shedding light on the history of libraries and the organization of knowledge. The result is an essential reference text for scholars of the early modern period, and for anyone interested in the expansion and dissemination of information and knowledge.
