How AI Thinks: How we built it, how it can help us, and how we can control it by Nigel Toon
English | February 8, 2024 | ISBN: 191170947X | 320 pages | PDF | 3.54 Mb
We are used to thinking of computers as being a step up from calculators - very good at storing information, and maybe even at playing a logical game like chess. But up to now they haven't been able to think in ways that are intuitive, or respond to questions as a human might. All that has changed, dramatically, in the past few years.

Our search engines are becoming answer engines. Artificial intelligence is already revolutionising sectors from education to healthcare to the creative arts. But how does an AI understand sentiment or context? How does it play and win games that have an almost infinite number of moves? And how can we work with AI to produce insights and innovations that are beyond human capacity, from writing code in an instant to unfolding the elaborate 3D puzzles of proteins?
We stand at the brink of a historic change that will disrupt society and at the same time create enormous opportunities for those who understand how AI thinks. Nigel Toon shows how we train AI to train itself, so that it can paint images that have never existed before or converse in any language. In doing so he reveals the strange and fascinating ways that humans think, too, as we learn how to live in a world shared by machine intelligences of our own creation.

Ray Gerts, "How Bad Do You Want to Lose Weight?"
English | 2016 | ASIN: B01AX6WJ0Y | EPUB | pages: 141 | 0.1 mb
I've wanted to write a book on weight loss for several years but never found enough time. My personal story with weight loss was my inspiration. I don't have a journalism background or any formal training but because writing this book was very important to me, I worked several months putting this book together.

I've been somewhere between chubby and thin all my life. It wasn't until I reached 50 years of age that I made a conscious decision to stop yo-yoing and keep the extra weight off. It does take time to lose weight. I lost a total of 60 pounds and have kept it off for more than 10 years now. I'm a senior and just recently lost another 5 pounds of body fat. I don't think anyone realizes how hard it is to carry around extra body fat until you become a senior. I don't try to lose weight anymore but I am trying to build muscle while I lose fat.
Today I weigh the same as I did in High School. I'm working on building muscle these days and that means body weight exercise and Yoga to keep me limber and improve my balance. It's great to still be able to ride a bike or jog around the neighborhood.
I've read hundreds of books, posts and newsletters from health and fitness websites and have done extensive research for this book and found that the science of weight loss is more well-defined today. It's not as much trial and error as before. Much of what you see on the internet seems to be advertisement for products. Most sites seem to be selling something and most of us are tired of trying diets or pills that don't work. I want to try and change your mind about losing weight. It may be easier than you thing. There are several good website that offer helpful information free. Check out my list of SOURCES on the last page. There are many good sites I didn't list, but those on my source page are the ones I used to write this book.
I believe it's about getting back to basics. Most of us put on body fat when we're still in school because we eat too much of all the wrong foods. As an adult we add body fat from eating the wrong foods, that's true, but also because we become less active. In school most of us are into sports, working out every day and as students we do more walking. Now we work at a desk most of the day and are only active on the weekends. Back to basics in short means there's no short cuts to losing weight. You'll have to start from scratch; forget everything you thought you knew about losing weight and forget about all those foods you love. The reason why most people aren't successful losing weight is that they don't want to give up their old life. They don't want to give up their favorite foods or the overindulging after work and on weekends. Oh sure, they will sacrifice for a little while, but the thought of never eating those big meals again or those rich foods, that's too much sacrifice; there must be an easier way.
If you really want to lose the body fat, and keep it off, you have to get healthy and stay healthy the rest of your life. Because it's not really about losing weight as much as it is about losing the extra body fat that your body has to keep alive and it's doing nothing for you except to drain your body's energy. That's the reason most of us don't worry about losing weight until their over 50. When you're over 50 you can feel that loss of energy. Before that most of us still have plenty of energy so we aren't concerned about our weight.
Being thin and fit is a sign of being healthy and today that helps you in your career, your social life, relationships and gives you more energy to accomplish more.
It doesn't cost money to lose weight, so anyone regardless of their income can change their life, lose weight and get healthy. I did it without buying any equipment, special meals or any diet pills and I'm going to tell you how.

Serhiy Zhadan, "How Fire Descends: New and Selected Poems "
English | ISBN: 0300272464 | 2023 | 136 pages | PDF | 256 KB
A searing testament to poetry's power to define and defy injustice, from iconic writer-activist Serhiy Zhadan

Finalist for the PEN America Literary Award for Poetry in Translation
"Reading these words now is enough to make one's breath catch. kraine's western partners do not see themselves as members of its funeral processions; they do not routinely line the streets and kneel before passing coffins."-Linda Kinstler, Times Literary Supplement
Since the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014, the Ukrainian poet Serhiy Zhadan has brought international attention to his country's struggle through his unflinching poetry of witness. In this searing testament to poetry's power to define and defy injustice, Zhadan honors the memory of the lost and addresses the living, inviting us to consider what language can offer to a country threatened with extinction. Young lovers, marginalized outsiders, and ordinary citizens pulse with life in a composite portrait of a people newly unified by extremity. Even in the midst of enemy fire, Zhadan's lyrical monuments, forged entirely in wartime, beat with a subterranean thrum of hope.
Translated by Virlana Tkacz and Wanda Phipps, and with a foreword by the poet Ilya Kaminsky, this selection of Zhadan's poetry is an homage to the Ukrainian people, a forceful reckoning with the violence of the past and present, and an act of artistic imagination that breaks with trauma and charts a new future for Ukraine.

Translated by Tony Gonzalez, "How Human Is Human? The View from Robotics Research"
English | 2020 | ISBN: 4866581379 | PDF | pages: 323 | 8.2 mb
How Human Is Human?: The View from Robotics Research presents an overview of various androids created by its author, Hiroshi Ishiguro, along with episodes and difficulties encountered during their development. Unlike the industrial robots so commonly seen in today's factories, Dr. Ishiguro's androids are designed with a focus on providing new tools for human interaction and communication. Of particular note are his Geminoid series androids, which are designed to exactly duplicate the appearance of actual living beings (in the case of the latter, Ishiguro himself), providing insights into psychological phenomena arising from the experience of encountering one's doppelganger. These androids further allow for remote operations over the Internet, allowing users to project their voice and even movements, thereby establishing a sense of presence that is impossible through commonplace technologies such as video conferencing. These androids thus represent a first step toward telepresence technologies only encountered today in works of science fiction.

How I Magically Unstuck My Life in Thirty Crazy Days with Bob Proctor Book 1 by Sandy Gallagher
English | February 14, 2023 | ISBN: 1722510706, 1722506008 | True EPUB | 154 pages | 0.7 MB
This soon to be classic parable of a young woman looking for an inspirational voice to help her out of stuckness is more relevant and useful than ever and destined to be a favorite of readers everywhere.

In his 1974 classic, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, author Robert M. Persig describes a condition he calls "stuckness" - that place where things break down and we are at our wits' end to find solutions. Persig encourages us to get unstuck: moving from the familiar to the unfamiliar through an "inquiry of values" that leads us to think about and resolve the problems we are facing.
Help has arrived. For decades, Sandy Gallagher, co-founder of Proctor Gallagher Institute has helped millions achieve more successful professional and personal lives. While the principles Gallagher teaches are timeless, the moment has come to apply them to a world of stuckness. Gallagher, inspired by Bob Proctor, has written How I Magically Unstuck My Life In Thirty Crazy Days to introduce twelve powerful, important lessons to a stuck generation. In her concise, easy-to-read story that expands to a three-book series and journal, Gallagher teaches readers the practical secrets about getting unstuck-and explains how these techniques deliver a life of fulfillment and success.

HOW NOT TO LOSE $1 MILLION
by JOHN ADDIS

English | 2024 | ISBN: 1923186035 | 192 pages | True EPUB | 5.51 MB

John Addis believes that most people probably shouldn' t be managing their own money. However, if you do, or want to, this book will help you to get better at it by avoiding the traps. The key lesson in the book is that successful investors don' t concentrate on picking winners; instead they work on minimising risk and learning from losses. John shares some of the mistakes he has made over his three decades of investing and, with the benefit of hindsight, the reasons why he made them. These include falling in love with a stock or a charismatic CEO, selling too soon as a stock continues to soar, misunderstanding the business model and not responding to obvious red flags. How not to lose $1 million is neatly structured into four categories: * stocks he bought but shouldn' t have * stocks he bought but sold too soon * stocks he bought but sold too late * stocks he should have bought but didn' t. John' s engaging storytelling makes his review of the stocks he invested in entertaining and enlightening. The value of this book is in the lessons investors can learn for their future investing success.

John J. Mearsheimer, "How States Think: The Rationality of Foreign Policy"
English | ISBN: 0300269307 | 2023 | 304 pages | PDF | 947 KB
A groundbreaking examination of a central question in international relations: Do states act rationally?

To understand world politics, you need to understand how states think. Are states rational? Much of international relations theory assumes that they are. But many scholars believe that political leaders rarely act rationally. The issue is crucial for both the study and practice of international politics, for only if states are rational can scholars and policymakers understand and predict their behavior.
John J. Mearsheimer and Sebastian Rosato argue that rational decisions in international politics rest on credible theories about how the world works and emerge from deliberative decision‑making processes. Using these criteria, they conclude that most states are rational most of the time, even if they are not always successful. Mearsheimer and Rosato make the case for their position, examining whether past and present world leaders, including George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin, have acted rationally in the context of momentous historical events, including both world wars, the Cold War, and the post-Cold War era.
By examining this fundamental concept in a novel and comprehensive manner, Mearsheimer and Rosato show how leaders think, and how to make policy for dealing with other states.

Ben Walker, "How They Died: Best Actress Oscar Award Winners Vol. 1"
English | 2014 | ASIN: B00II7N3T2 | EPUB | pages: 60 | 0.7 mb
This is a book about the world's greatest actresses who are no longer with us. Each actress profiled received the Academy Award for Best Actress (an Oscar) at least once.

I wrote this book so that anyone who reads it will understand what it takes to be the best. Many people have wishes and desires but only a few do what it takes to fulfill their wishes and desires. This book describes the cost of greatness to each of the actresses profiled as well as the cost to their family, friends and colleagues.
Sadly but necessarily, this book also describes how each actress died.
If you are an actress or you have a friend or family member who is, you need to read this book. If you are not an actress and you do not know any, you will still find this book useful as the lessons therein apply to people from all walks of life.

How the World Ran Out of Everything: Inside the Global Supply Chain by Peter S. Goodman
English | June 11, 2024 | ISBN: 0063257920 | 416 pages | PDF | 2.98 Mb
By the New York Times's Global Economics Correspondent, an extraordinary journey to understand the worldwide supply chain-exposing both the fascinating pathways of manufacturing and transportation that bring products to your doorstep, and the ruthless business logic that has left local communities at the mercy of a complex and fragile network for their basic necessities.

"A tale that will change how you look at the world."-Mark Leibovich
One of Foreign Policy's "Most Anticipated Books of 2024"
How does the wealthiest country on earth run out of protective gear in the middle of a public health catastrophe? How do its parents find themselves unable to locate crucially needed infant formula? How do its largest companies spend billions of dollars making cars that no one can drive for a lack of chips?
The last few years have radically highlighted the intricacy and fragility of the global supply chain. Enormous ships were stuck at sea, warehouses overflowed, and delivery trucks stalled. The result was a scarcity of everything from breakfast cereal to medical devices, from frivolous goods to lifesaving necessities. And while the scale of the pandemic shock was unprecedented, it underscored the troubling reality that the system was fundamentally at risk of descending into chaos all along. And it still is. Sabotaged by financial interests, loss of transparency in markets, and worsening working conditions for the people tasked with keeping the gears turning, our global supply chain has become perpetually on the brink of collapse.
In How the World Ran Out of Everything, award-winning journalist Peter S. Goodman reveals the fascinating innerworkings of our supply chain and the factors that have led to its constant, dangerous vulnerability. His reporting takes readers deep into the elaborate system, showcasing the triumphs and struggles of the human players who operate it-from factories in Asia and an almond grower in Northern California, to a group of striking railroad workers in Texas, to a truck driver who Goodman accompanies across hundreds of miles of the Great Plains. Through their stories, Goodman weaves a powerful argument for reforming a supply chain to become truly reliable and resilient, demanding a radical redrawing of the bargain between labor and shareholders, and deeper attention paid to how we get the things we need.
From one of the most respected economic journalists working today, How the World Ran Out of Everything is a fiercely smart, deeply informative look at how our supply chain operates, and why its reform is crucial-not only to avoid dysfunction in our day to day lives, but to protect the fate of our global fortunes.

Being sane: it's what we are all striving for, right? With tips and tricks from widely celebrated-and extremely fictional-therapist, Dr. Theresa Lawn, you too can achieve mental sanity, a higher sense of self, and the perfect Denver omelette.

Dr. Theresa Lawn-a demented, self-proclaimed therapeutic genius-has shared her groundbreaking treatise on the mental health sphere exclusively with Emmy-nominated writer and performer Emily Altman (whose absurd and hilarious voice you may recognize from shows such as Big Mouth, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Inside Amy Schumer).
There's so much to learn from Dr. Lawn's work-from how to deal with change to learning what Dr. Lawn's boyfriend's butt looks like, from how to approach conflict to understanding her profound passion for both McDonald's and Bob Dole. These are deeply universal human experiences-and support for it all is within these pages.

How to Listen (Mindfulness Essentials) by Thich Nhat Hanh
English | September 10th, 2024 | ISBN: 0984627111 | 128 pages | True EPUB | 2.62 MB
Listening with compassion can solve our most pressing issues-across global politics and interpersonal relationships and within our own hearts and minds.

In How to Listen, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh demonstrates how deep listening is a fundamental building block of good communication. But perhaps more fundamentally, listening is central to our practice, a basic ingredient to strengthen our capacity for mindfulness, concentration, insight, and compassion. Learning how to listen with equanimity to life itself, we generate insight into the true nature of our deep connection to all things. And from this place of understanding-when we know that we aren't separate-our capacity to listen deepens even further.
With clear and gentle guidance from Thich Nhat Hanh, we learn how truly listening-to ourselves, to each other, to Mother Earth, and to the many "bells of mindfulness" that are available to us in each moment-is the foundation of our practice, an expression of love, and a solution to our deepest and most urgent large-scale conflicts.
All Mindfulness Essentials books are illustrated with playful sumi-ink drawings by California artist Jason DeAntonis.
