Rare Diseases in the Age of Health 2.0 By Remco L. A. de Vrueh (auth.), Rajeev K. Bali, Lodewijk Bos, Michael Christopher Gibbons, Simon Ibell (eds.)
2014 | 292 Pages | ISBN: 3642386423 | PDF | 6 MB
This text focuses on various factors associated with orphan diseases and the influence and role of health information technologies. Orphan diseases have not been adopted by the pharmaceutical industry because they provide little financial incentive to treat or prevent it. It is estimated that 6,000-7,000 orphan diseases exist today; as medical knowledge continues to expand, this number is likely to become much greater. The book highlights the opportunities and challenges in this increasingly important area. The book explores new avenues which are opened by information technologies and Health 2.0, and highlights also economic opportunities of orphan disease medicine. The editors of this new book have international experience and competencies in the key areas of patient empowerment, healthcare and clinical knowledge management, healthcare inequalities and disparities, rare diseases and patient advocacy.

Raspberry Pi IoT In Python Using GPIO Zero, 2nd Edition by Harry Fairhead, Mike James
English | February 17, 2024 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0CVW1D2Z5 | PDF | 24 Mb
Important Information:

This Kindle is a Print Replica Format. The reason for this is that we regard paging as essential for programming books however this means it only works on Fire Tablets and Kindle Reading Apps.
Check to see if your device is supported!
The Raspberry Pi makes an ideal match for the Internet of Things. But to put it to good use in IoT you need two areas of expertise, electronics and programming and because of the way hardware and software engineering tend to occupy separate niches, you may need help with combining the two which is what this book sets out to do.
Python is an excellent language for learning about physical computing. It might not be as fast as C, but it is much easier to use for complex data processing. One reason for Python's popularity is its wealth of supporting libraries and there are several for interfacing hardware. The GPIO Zero library is the official way to use Python with the GPIO and other devices and this book looks at how to use it to interface to fundamental IoT devices - from LEDs and buzzers to servos and stepper motors and several off-the-shelf Raspberry Pi add-ons.
This revised second edition had been expanded to cover all the current Raspberry Pis including the latest, the Pi 5, and the Pi Zero 2W which, with its WiFi capability and being a quad-core device, is an ideal device for IoT projects. It has also been updated to cover the latest version of the GPIO Zero library, which is both the library recommended by Raspberry Pi and the only one that works with the Pi 5.
The emphasis in this book is about using and understanding the hardware and GPIO Zero. It not only shows you how to "follow the beaten track", but how to create your own tracks. While it isn't a project book, many of the code examples described are part way to projects and all of the devices and techniques described can be used to create practical projects. Similarly while it doesn't teach you the whole of Python, it does bring you up to speed in the aspects of the language needed for interfacing with hardware.
Harry Fairhead has worked with microprocessors, and electronics in general, for many years and is an enthusiastic proponent of the IoT. He is the author of Raspberry Pi IoT in C, which has recently been republished in its third edition, and Raspberry Pi IoT in C Using Linux Drivers, now in its second edition.
Mike James is the co-author Raspberry Pi IoT in Python Using Linux Drivers, Second Edition. He is also the author of the Programmer's Python: Something Completely Differentseries of books.

Rationis Defensor: Essays in Honour of Colin Cheyne By Alan Musgrave (auth.), James Maclaurin (eds.)
2012 | 300 Pages | ISBN: 9400739826 | PDF | 3 MB
Rationis Defensor is to be a volume of previously unpublished essays celebrating the life and work of Colin Cheyne. Colin was until recently Head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Otago, a department that can boast of many famous philosophers among its past and present faculty and which has twice been judged as the strongest research department across all disciplines in governmental research assessments. Colin is the immediate past President of the Australasian Association for Philosophy (New Zealand Division). He is the author of Knowledge, Cause, and Abstract Objects: Causal Objections to Platonism (Springer, 2001) and the editor, with Vladimir Svoboda and Bjorn Jespersen, of Pavel Tichy's Collected Papers in Logic and Philosophy (University of Otago Press, 2005) and, with John Worrall, of Rationality and Reality: Conversations with Alan Musgrave (Springer, 2006). This volume celebrates the dedication to rational enquiry and the philosophical style of Colin Cheyne. It also celebrates the distinctive brand of naturalistic philosophy for which Otago has become known. Contributors to the volume include a wide variety of philosophers, all with a personal connection to Colin, and all of whom are, in their own way, defenders of rationality.

Rattled: How to Calm New Mom Anxiety with the Power of the Postpartum Brain by Nicole Pensak
English | April 30th, 2024 | ISBN: 1682688305 | 240 pages | True EPUB | 1.35 MB
Most new mothers bring their infants to the doctor but ignore any distressing feelings or sensations they might themselves have-that sense of being "rattled" at many moments throughout the day and night. In Rattled, Dr. Nicole Pensak shares her own experiences and those of her patients to help new mothers feel informed, validated, and guided through matrescence. After giving birth, a woman often feels like a completely different person. It may sound dramatic, but the rollercoaster of physical and psychological changes affects brain and body in a similar way that adolescence changes us. To compound that, many women hide these feelings, worrying that something is wrong with them.

Dr. Nicole Pensak is here to reassure us that being "rattled" is normal, and not at all surprising. After all, seismic changes in identity and emotion have occurred. Research shows that a woman's brain shifts in real, biological ways very quickly after giving birth. Many women become hypervigilant, for good reason: the brain is telling her to stay alert because she has a human to keep alive and safe. While these brainpower boosts can cause anxious feelings, they can also help to manage the distress and harness the advantages of the postpartum brain. In fact, this is a time of neuroplasticity, when the brain is more receptive to positive reinforcement.
Trained at Yale and Harvard and certified in perinatal mental health, Dr. Pensak provides practical and emotional support, helping to relieve the anxiety and pressure for perfection in motherhood and paving the way for a better beginning for families and babies. She discusses mental health treatment and the upside of therapy during this changing time, and offers accessible scientific information, relatable anecdotes, and strategies for self-care. The result is a reassuring and practical handbook that new mothers and their families will refer to time and again.

Re-Creating Nature: Science, Technology, and Human Values in the Twenty-First Century by James T. Bradley
English | September 24th, 2019 | ISBN: 0817320296 | 408 pages | True EPUB | 3.70 MB
An exploration of the moral and ethical implications of new biotechnologies

Many of the ethical issues raised by new technologies have not been widely examined, discussed, or indeed settled. For example, robotics technology challenges the notion of personhood. Should a robot, capable of making what humans would call ethical decisions, be held responsible for those decisions and the resultant actions? Should society reward and punish robots in the same way that it does humans? Likewise, issues of safety, environmental concerns, and distributive justice arise with the increasing acceptance of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food production nanotechnology in engineering and medicine, and human gene therapy and enhancement. The problem of dual-use-when a technology can be used both to benefit and to harm-exists with virtually all new technologies but is central in the context of emerging 21st century technologies ranging from artificial intelligence and robotics to human gene-editing and brain-computer interfacing.
In Re-Creating Nature: Science, Technology, and Human Values in the Twenty-First Century, James T. Bradley addresses emerging biotechnologies with prodigious potential to benefit humankind but that are also fraught with ethical consequences. Some actually possess the power to directly alter the evolution of life on earth including human. Specifically, these topics include stem cells, synthetic biology, GMOs in agriculture, nanotechnology, bioterrorism, CRISPR gene-editing technology, three-parent babies, robotics and roboethics, artificial intelligence, and human brain research and neurotechnologies.
Offering clear explanations of these various technologies, a pragmatic presentation of the conundrums involved, and questions that illuminate hypothetical situations, Bradley guides discussions of these and other thorny issues resulting from the development of new biotechnologies. He also highlights the responsibilities of scientists to conduct research in an ethical manner and the responsibilities of nonscientists to become "science literate" in the twenty-first century.

Re-negotiating Gender: Household Division of Labor when She Earns More than He Does By Lake Lui (auth.)
2013 | 154 Pages | ISBN: 9400748477 | PDF | 1 MB
In Chinese societies where both "money" and "gender" confer power, can a woman's economic success relative to her husband's bring about a more equal division of household labor? Lui's qualitative study of "status-reversed" Hong Kong families, wherein wives earn more than their husbands, examines how couples re-negotiate household labor in ways that perpetuate male dominance within the family even when the traditional gender expectation that "men rule outside, women rule inside" (nanzhuwai, nuzhunei) is challenged. Going beyond the dyadic negotiation of household labor, this important study also explores the role of "third parties," namely the couples' children and parents, who actively encourage couples to conform to traditional gender norms, thereby reproducing an unequal division of household labor. Based upon the experiences of families with stay-at-home dads, Lui further identifies a new mechanism of deconstructing gender, by which couples concertedly construct new norms of "work" and "gender" that they maintain through daily interactions to fit their atypical relative earnings. As a result, there are sparks of hope that both men and women can be liberated from a set of traditional social norms. Re-negotiating Gender: Household Division of Labor When She Earns More than He Does is essential reading in the fields of family and gender studies, sociology, psychology, and East Asian studies.

Reading Maimonides' Philosophy in 19th Century Germany: The Guide to Religious Reform By George Y. Kohler (auth.)
2012 | 374 Pages | ISBN: 9400740344 | PDF | 5 MB
This book investigates the re-discovery of Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed by the Wissenschaft des Judentums movement in Germany of the nineteenth and beginning twentieth Germany. Since this movement is inseparably connected with religious reforms that took place at about the same time, it shall be demonstrated how the Reform Movement in Judaism used the Guide for its own agenda of historizing, rationalizing and finally turning Judaism into a philosophical enterprise of 'ethical monotheism'. The study follows the reception of Maimonidean thought, and the Guide specifically, through the nineteenth century, from the first beginnings of early reformers in 1810 and their reading of Maimonides to the development of a sophisticated reform-theology, based on Maimonides, in the writings of Hermann Cohen more then a hundred years later.

Eden Wales Freedman, "Reading Testimony, Witnessing Trauma: Confronting Race, Gender, and Violence in American Literature"
English | ISBN: 1496827341 | 2020 | 244 pages | PDF | 9 MB
Winner of the 2020 Eudora Welty Prize

Theorists emphasize the necessity of writing about―or witnessing―trauma in order to overcome it. To this critical conversation, Reading Testimony, Witnessing Trauma: Confronting Race, Gender, and Violence in American Literature treats reader response to traumatic and testimonial literature written by and about African American women and adds insight into the engagement of testimonial literature. Eden Wales Freedman articulates a theory of reading (or dual-witnessing) that explores how narrators and readers can witness trauma together. She places these original theories of traumatic reception in conversation with the African American literary tradition to speak to the histories, cultures, and traumas of African Americans, particularly the repercussions of slavery, as witnessed in African American literature. The volume also considers intersections of race and gender and how narrators and readers can cross such constructs to witness collectively.

Reagan: His Life and Legend by Max Boot
English | September 10, 2024 | ISBN: 0871409445 | True EPUB | 880 pages | 54.3 MB
"Reagan: His Life and Legend aims to be the definitive biography, and it succeeds. It's a thoughtful, absorbing account. It's also a surprising one." ―Daniel Immerwahr, New Yorker

Named one of the "Nonfiction Books to Read This Fall" by NPR and the New York Times
Son of the Midwest, movie star, and mesmerizing politician―America's fortieth president comes to three-dimensional life in this gripping and profoundly revisionist biography.
In this "monumental and impressive" biography, Max Boot, the distinguished political columnist, illuminates the untold story of Ronald Reagan, revealing the man behind the mythology. Drawing on interviews with over one hundred of the fortieth president's aides, friends, and family members, as well as thousands of newly available documents, Boot provides "the best biography of Ronald Reagan to date" (Robert Mann).
The story begins not in star-studded Hollywood but in the cradle of the Midwest, small-town Illinois, where Reagan was born in 1911 to Nelle Clyde Wilson, a devoted Disciples of Christ believer, and Jack Reagan, a struggling, alcoholic salesman. Boot vividly creates a portrait of a handsome young man, indeed a much-vaunted lifeguard, whose early successes mirrored those of Horatio Alger. And contextualizing Reagan's life against American history, Boot re-creates the world in which Reagan transitioned from local Iowa sportscaster to budding screen actor.
The world of Hollywood from the 1930s to the 1950s would prove significant, not only in Reagan's coming-of-age in such classics as Knute Rockne and Kings Row but during the twilight of his film career, when he played opposite a chimpanzee in Bedtime for Bonzo, and then his eventual emergence as a television host of General Electric Theater, which established his bona fides as one of the leading conservative voices of the time. Indeed, the leap to California governor in 1966 seemed almost preordained, in which Reagan became a bellwether for a nation in the throes of a generational shift.
Reagan's 1980 presidential election augured a shift that continues into this century. Boot writes not as a partisan but as a historian seeking to set the story straight. He explains how Reagan was an ideologue but also a supreme pragmatist who signed pro-abortion and gun control bills as governor, cut deals with Democrats in both Sacramento and Washington, and befriended Mikhail Gorbachev to end the Cold War. A master communicator, Reagan revived America's spirits after the traumas of Vietnam and Watergate. But Boot also shows how Reagan was armored in obliviousness. He traces Reagan's opposition to civil rights over forty years, reveals how he neglected the exploding AIDS epidemic, and details how America experienced a level of income inequality not seen since the Gilded Age.
With its revelatory insights, Reagan: His Life and Legend is no apologia, depicting a man with a good-versus-evil worldview derived from his moralistic upbringing and Hollywood westerns. Providing fresh examinations of "trickle-down economics," the Cold War's end, the Iran-Contra affair, as well as a nuanced portrait of Reagan's family, this definitive biography is as compelling a presidential biography as any in recent decades.

Reasonableness and Responsibility: A Theory of Contract Law By Martín Hevia (auth.)
2013 | 184 Pages | ISBN: 9400746040 | PDF | 1 MB
If, as John Rawls famously suggests, justice is the first virtue of social institutions, how are we to understand the institution of contract law? This book proposes a Rawlsian theory of contract law. It argues that justice requires that we understand contract rules in terms of the idea of reasonable, terms of interaction - that is, terms that would be accepted by reasonable persons moved by a desire for a social world in which they, as free and equal, can cooperate with others on terms they accept. On that basis, the book explains the main doctrines of contract law, including those governing third parties, in both the Common Law and the Civil Law.

Rebel With a Cause: Roots, Records and Revolutions by Darcus Beese
English | 15 Aug. 2024 | ISBN: 1788706099 | True EPUB | 320 pages | 3.7 MB
'Darcus Beese is a formidable cat' CHUCK D

'An inspiration' ANNIE LENNOX
'A prince of a man' BONO
The must-read memoir from Darcus Beese - the first black president of Island Records and one of the greatest A&Rs of his generation. From growing up as a teenager on the streets of West London to running one of the biggest record labels in the world in New York - this is a truly remarkable rags to riches tale.
Rebel With a Cause is the story of how a teenage apprentice hairdresser from Fulham worked his way up from teaboy to head one of the UK's biggest and most successful record labels, Island Records, signing and nurturing some of the greatest artists of the twenty-first century - from Amy Winehouse and Jessie J to U2 and Florence and the Machine.
But this is also the story of a young man raised in musically fertile and politically febrile times. His activist parents Darcus Howe and Barbara Beese were tireless campaigners for racial equality at a time when racism was rife, not only on the streets, in schools and on the terraces, but also in the highest institutions of power. Fighting for equality - for himself and for his artists - has therefore been a key part of Darcus's life.
This is the incredible tale of an indomitable leader, an industry pioneer and rebel with a true cause.

Recent Trends in German and European Constitutional Law: German Reports Presented to the XVIIth International Congress on Comparative Law, Utrecht, 16 to 22 July 2006 By Armin von Bogdandy Dr. iur. (auth.), Eibe Riedel, Rüdiger Wolfrum (eds.)
2006 | 289 Pages | ISBN: 3540346678 | PDF | 2 MB
The present volume compiles the German National Reports on Public Law that are to be presented at the XVIIth Congress of the Inter- tional Academy of Comparative Law, which will take place from 16 - 22 July 2006 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. By publishing the conference report before the conference itself has taken place, we hope to enable interested scholars and practitioners to gain information in greater - tail as it will be possible during the conference, and in this way to stimulate and inspirit the overall discussion. The Congress, like its predecessors, will bring together academics and practitioners from all over the world and thus offer an excellent opportunity for discussion and comparison on a wide range of current and interesting issues. The articles of this volume map out the current situation and doctrinal ramifications of a specific comparative project, as designed by the C- gress organisers. Each contributor provides both a full picture of the subject area and sets out his or her view on the topic, which will, given our experiences from the previous conferences, stimulate and enrich the discussions at this year's conference. This volume contains eight reports focussing on specific topics of G- man Public Law and two dealing with questions of European Consti- tional Law.

K.J. Kesselring, "Reckoning with History: Essays on Uses of the Past"
English | ISBN: 0228022428 | 2024 | 270 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Bringing together essays on uses of history as both a practical activity and an approach to thinking about the present, this collection explores ways in which people have reckoned with history in pasts both distant and near. Reckoning with History begins by examining uses of the past in early modern Britain, a period in which print, religious reformation, and political conflict transformed historical culture. Later essays offer insights into personal, popular, professional, and sometimes deeply political uses of the past in other times and places, helping to contextualize our own moments in historical writing and to link the early and post-modern periods. Throughout, contributors respond to the writings of Daniel Woolf, whose scholarship illuminates the history of the historical discipline and the social circulation of the past. Covering subjects such as early archival practices, memories of historic plagues, and the type of commemorations needed to revitalize liberal democracies, Reckoning with History contextualizes the uses of the past today.

Reconciliation Policy in Germany 1998-2008: Construing the 'Problem' of the Incompatibility of Paid Employment and Care Work By Cornelius Grebe (auth.)
2010 | 244 Pages | ISBN: 3531169157 | PDF | 1 MB
Cornelius Grebe offers an analysis of work-family reconciliation policy in Germany during the Socialdemocrat-Green coalition government of 1998 to 2005. His emphasis lies on Anti-Discrimination Policy, Childcare Policy, Parental Leave Policy, and Working Time Policy. The study combines a social constructionist stance with an alternative feminist standpoint, thus offering a new methodology for political science. Although no ready-made solutions to the incompatibility problem are suggested, its changed representation is analyzed closely, leading to engaging conclusions about how policy might be different if policy-makers understood the problems differently. The study is an entirely original contribution to understanding social policy in Germany and essential reading for researchers and students from the social sciences, in particular sociology and political science.
