Reconstructing Research Integrity: Beyond Denial by Barbara Redman
English | March 24, 2023 | ISBN: 3031271106 | 220 pages | MOBI | 0.65 Mb
This book exposes significant threats to research integrity and identifies policies and practices that can reverse these trends. It is focused on human research and US policy. Recent assessments have shown inadequacies in institutions, policies, and practices that seriously compromise ethics. The presumed self-regulatory nature of the scientific endeavor has been exposed to have allowed unabated areas of poor-quality science, an incomplete and inaccessible scientific record, conflicts of interest, differing notions of accountability, virtually no evidence base to direct research integrity policy, and a growing sense of alienation, moral injury and even revolt among scientists. Reconstructing Research Integrity aims to capture ways of vigorously moving toward scientific and ethical rigor, including self-correction and emerging or already-successful initiatives. The book begins with analysis of the full system of institutions, policies, and practices involved in production, dissemination, and application of research, including an examination of the blind spots in research ethics ideology, policy, and practice. The book then identifies policies and practices that can reverse harmful ethical trends, such as strengthening Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training and improving self-regulation in the scientific community. Finally, the book discusses the constant evolution of research ethics and integrity, which is illustrated by emerging research fields like gene editing and data science.

This book will be of interest to all research administrators in academic, commercial and government positions; to policy advisors at the National Science Foundation and at the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine; to graduate students in research ethics; to advanced bioethics education programs across the globe; and to researchers and consultants in ELSI (ethical, legal, and social implications) programs.

Reconstruction of Wave-Particle Duality and its Implications for General Chemistry Textbooks By Mansoor Niaz, Cecilia Marcano (auth.)
2012 | 46 Pages | ISBN: 9400743955 | PDF | 1 MB
It goes without saying that atomic structure, including its dual wave-particle nature, cannot be demonstrated in the classroom. Thus, for most science teachers, especially those in physics and chemistry, the textbook is their key resource and their students' core source of information. Science education historiography recognizes the role played by the history and philosophy of science in developing the content of our textbooks, and with this in mind, the authors analyze more than 120 general chemistry textbooks published in the USA, based on criteria derived from a historical reconstruction of wave-particle duality. They come to some revealing conclusions, including the fact that very few textbooks discussed issues such as the suggestion, by both Einstein and de Broglie, and before conclusive experimental evidence was available, that wave-particle duality existed. Other large-scale omissions included de Broglie's prescription for observing this duality, and the importance of the Davisson-Germer experiments, as well as the struggle to interpret the experimental data they were collecting. Also untouched was the background to the role played by Schrödinger in developing de Broglie's ideas. The authors argue that rectifying these deficiencies will arouse students' curiosity by giving them the opportunity to engage creatively with the content of science curricula. They also assert that it isn't just the experimental data in science that matters, but the theoretical insights and unwonted inspirations, too. In addition, the controversies and discrepancies in the theoretical and experimental record are key drivers in understanding the development of science as we know it today.

Recovering Caribbean Nature
by James A. Kushlan, Kirsten Hines

English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032489839 | 267 pages | True PDF EPUB | 70.82 MB

The Caribbean is a global biodiversity hotspot; half of its resident bird species are found nowhere else, yet, a quarter are threatened with extinction. Nearly all its native amphibians and reptiles and thousands of plants also are endemic. Yet, less than 1% of the landscape can be considered natural; and apart from reserves, most land is privately owned. Despite the challenges of such habitat fragmentation, the Caribbean's distinctive fauna and flora can be preserved through planning and managing a connected network of sustainable naturalistic landscapes, reserves, parks, and private gardens. This book uniquely provides both a theoretical background and practical applications to restoring nature within the tropical Caribbean. Packed with beautiful color photographs, it offers unifying principles that can be applied across the tropics and synthesizes information on the Caribbean's environmental uniqueness and globally significant biodiversity. It also provides explicit guidance on establishing sustainable and more naturalistic landscapes from large public lands to private yards and gardens. The book is essential reading for academics and researchers studying the Caribbean environment, resource management professionals, and scientists and educators from nongovernmental organizations who provide programs and advocacy for conservation and regional sustainability. Moreover, it highlights the importance of private lands and gardens, where the greatest gains can be made, and so offers a handbook for knowledgeable private landowners and their professional advisors.

Carl R. Weinberg, "Red Dynamite: Creationism, Culture Wars, and Anticommunism in America "
English | ISBN: 1501759299 | 2021 | 366 pages | PDF | 5 MB
In Red Dynamite, Carl R. Weinberg argues that creationism's tenacious hold on American public life depended on culture-war politics inextricably embedded in religion. Many Christian conservatives were convinced that evolutionary thought promoted immoral and even bestial social, sexual, and political behavior. The "fruits" of subscribing to Darwinism were, in their minds, a dangerous rearrangement of God-given standards and the unsettling of traditional hierarchies of power. Despite claiming to focus exclusively on science and religion, creationists were practicing politics. Their anticommunist campaign, often infused with conspiracy theory, gained power from the fact that the Marxist founders, the early Bolshevik leaders, and their American allies were staunch evolutionists.

Using the Scopes "Monkey" Trial as a starting point,

Reds: The Tragedy of American Communism by Maurice Isserman
English | June 4, 2024 | ISBN: 1541620038 | 384 pages | PDF | 20 Mb
"The wisest, most eloquent history of the Communist Party USA that has ever been written" (Michael Kazin, author of What It Took to Win),revealing how party members contributed to struggles for justice and equality in America even as they championed a brutal, totalitarian state, the USSR

After generations in the shadows, socialism is making headlines in the United States, following the Bernie Sanders presidential campaigns and the election of several democratic socialists to Congress. Today's leftists hail from a long lineage of anti-capitalist activists in the United States, yet the true legacy and lessons of their most radical and controversial forebears, the American Communists, remain little understood.

In Reds, historian Maurice Isserman focuses on the deeply contradictory nature of the history of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), a movement that attracted egalitarian idealists and bred authoritarian zealots. Founded in 1919, the CPUSA fought for a just society in America: members organized powerful industrial unions, protested racism, and moved the nation left. At the same time, Communists maintained unwavering faith in the USSR's claims to be a democratic workers' state and came to be regarded as agents of a hostile foreign power. Following Nikita Khrushchev's revelation of Joseph Stalin's crimes, however, doubt in Soviet leadership erupted within the CPUSA, leading to the organization's decline into political irrelevance.
This is the balanced and definitive account of an essential chapter in the history of radical politics in the United States.

Radwan A. Shaban, "Reducing Poverty Through Growth And Social Policy Reform in Russia (Directions in Development)"
English | 2006 | pages: 314 | ISBN: 0821363409 | PDF | 1,9 mb
Following the 1998 financial crisis, four out of every ten people slipped into poverty, not able to meet basic needs. Luckily, post-crisis economic rebound was impressive and broad-based - albeit uneven - across sectors and regions. This title explores the nature of poverty, both nationally and regionally, to identify the groups with a high poverty risk. It then examines growth-poverty linkages through the labor market, as well as the contribution of growth and inequality to the recent poverty reduction. It also considers the expected impact of WTO accession on overall growth and poverty. Finally, it focuses on the scope for improving social policy in ways that will have a direct impact on the poor. Following the 1998 financial crisis, a steep drop in consumption occurred across all income groups, but especially hurting the poor. Four out of every ten people slipped into poverty, not able to meet basic needs. Luckily, post-crisis economic rebound was impressive and broad-based - albeit uneven - across sectors and regions. The report analyzes the main facets and dynamics of poverty in Russia from 1997 to 2003. The analysis was conducted by Russian and international experts as part of a collaborative project by the World Bank, the United Kingdom Department for International Development, and the Russian government team comprising the Ministry of Labor and Social Development, the Goskomstat, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, and the Ministry of Finance. For the first time, this report has been able to utilize the vast micro data of the Household Budget Survey, a Goskomstat survey of 49,000 Russian households, conducted regularly since 1952. In addition, it presents practically the first poverty-related analysis of the data collected under the NOBUS - the Goskomstat survey of householdsA? access to social services, carried out in 2003. The report explores the nature of poverty, both nationally and regionally, to identify the groups with a high poverty risk. Next, the report examines growth-poverty linkages through the labor market, as well as the contribution of growth and inequality to the recent poverty reduction. It also considers the expected impact of WTO accession on overall growth and poverty. Finally, the report focuses on the scope for improving social policy in ways that will have a direct impact on the poor. The last chapter of the report provides recommendations for improved monitoring of poverty outcomes on the basis of the Household Budget Survey.

Sarah Hoover, "Reflective Affective Dramaturgies of Participatory Theatre: Larping Audiences into Performance"
English | ISBN: 3031644581 | 2024 | 202 pages | EPUB, PDF | 4 MB + 7 MB
As the popularity and diversity of participatory theatre productions increase, scholarly and artistic attention toward the audience as agentive contributors and interpreters must keep pace. Simultaneously, the COVID-19 pandemic has added urgency to the collective artistic encounter and its value to individual and community health. This book proposes "reflective affective" dramaturgies of participatory theatre aimed toward incorporating participants' reflections and affective responses as material in an emergent exploration of represented systems of power. The volume's interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks stem from performance studies discourses including feminist materialism, phenomenology and affect theory, bringing them together with larp scholarship on character/self performance, agency and emergence. Through its integration of the practical and theoretical, this work serves as an essential study for scholars, students and artists in theatre studies, performance studies, visual art studies, role-play studies, cultural studies, and philosophy.

Regional Mortality Differences in Germany By Eva U.B. Kibele (auth.)
2012 | 304 Pages | ISBN: 9400744315 | PDF | 29 MB
Regional mortality differences are one dimension of health inequalities, but its trends and determinants in Germany are widely unknown. This book examines and illustrates patterns of regional mortality in Germany-with focus on small-area differentials-and their changes over time. It identifies explanatory factors at individual and regional level. Mortality differences between eastern and western Germany exist, but small-area mortality differentials are often greater. Though the main spatial mortality patterns remain, this study provides evidence that some distinct changes in the small-area mortality patterns in Germany-especially among women-occurred within a short period of time. Mortality inequalities at younger ages and in behavior-related causes as well as differences in socioeconomic conditions contribute strongly to regional mortality differences in Germany. The book shows that the complex interplay between individual- and regional-level mortality risk factors requires a multidimensional approach to reduce regional mortality inequalities.

Elizabeth Walcott-Hackshaw, "Reinterpreting the Haitian Revolution And Its Cultural Aftershocks"
English | 2006 | pages: 201 | ISBN: 976640190X | PDF | 0,8 mb
Haiti, its revolution and its culture remain largely unknown or misunderstood in the English-speaking world. This collection of essays seeks to both elucidate aspects of Haitian history and culture and provoke interest in readers and scholars for further research in these fields. Several general guiding questions connect the essays: What were, what are the cultural repercussions of Haiti's revolution, in Haiti and elsewhere? What is the truth of Haiti, its history, its intellectual traditions, its culture? What role has culture played in shaping Haiti's history, and conversely, how has Haiti's history determined, inspired, liberated and restricted Haitian culture and thought? In a land that has constantly relived its past, how can we imagine a Haitian future? Can we rethink history and memory? Can an understanding of post-independence culture and thought point tentatively to a way out of the traps of the past, without effecting a counterproductive forgetting of the revolution? to these questions: the history of Haitian revolutionary universalism; the idea of the Caribbean's historical lack and its application to Haiti; the relationship between personal and political revolutions in Yanick Lahens's fiction; the attempt to write personal history in Edwidge Danticat's work; the role of Haiti and the revolution in forming ideas of race; the importance of the nineteenth-century Haitian intellectual Antenor Firmin in the development of the discipline of anthropology; the influence of St. Domingue refugees in the genesis of New Orleans jazz; the prevalence of the Haytian Fear narrative in nineteenth-century Trinidad; and the many and diverse post-independence representations of Toussaint Louverture. This book will be of interest to students and readers of Haitian literature, history and culture, as well as those interested in broader Caribbean studies, postcolonial studies and African-American studies.

Robert Cummings Neville, "Religion: Philosophical Theology, Volume Three Ed 3"
English | ISBN: 1438456999 | 2015 | 422 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Religion is the third and final volume in Robert Cummings Neville's systematic development of a new philosophical theology. Unfolding through his earlier volumes, Ultimates and Existence, and now in Religion, philosophical theology considers first-order questions generally treated by religious traditions through philosophical methods while reflecting Neville's long engagement with philosophy, theology, and Eastern and Western religious traditions. In this capstone to the trilogy, Neville provides a theory of religion and presents a sacred worldview to guide religious participation. His philosophical theory of value enlightens religions' approaches to ethics, spirituality, and religious institutional living and collaboration. With a detailed examination of plausibility conditions for sacred worldviews, the book concludes with an exploration of "religionless religion" for which institutions of religion are of penultimate value.

Through the development of philosophical theology, Neville has built a unique, multidisciplinary, comparative, nonconfessional theological system, one that addresses concerns and provides tools for scientific and humanistic scholars of religion, postmodern thinkers, intellectuals from both secular and religious backgrounds, and those interested in the global state of religion today.

Religion and Place: Landscape, Politics and Piety By Elizabeth Olson, Peter Hopkins, Lily Kong (auth.), Peter Hopkins, Lily Kong, Elizabeth Olson (eds.)
2013 | 222 Pages | ISBN: 9400746849 | PDF | 3 MB
This unique collection highlights the importance of landscape, politics and piety to our understandings of religion and place. The geographies of religion have developed rapidly in the last couple of decades and this book provides both a conceptual framing of the key issues and debates involved, and rich illustrations through empirical case studies. The chapters span the discipline of human geography and cover contexts as diverse as veiling in Turkey, religious landscapes in rural Peru, and refugees and faith in South Africa. A number of prominent scholars and emerging researchers examine topical themes in each engaging chapter with significant foci being: religious transnationalism and religious landscapes; gendering of religious identities and contexts; fashion, faith and the body; identity, resistance and belief; immigrant identities, citizenship and spaces of belief; alternative spiritualities and places of retreat and enchantment. Together they make a series of important contributions that illuminate the central role of geography to the meaning and implications of lived religion, public piety and religious embodiment. As such, this collection will be of much interest to researchers and students working on topics relating to religion and place, including human geographers, sociologists, religious studies and religious education scholars.

Kerry O'Halloran, "Religion, Charity and Human Rights"
English | ISBN: 1107020484 | 2014 | 548 pages | PDF | 4 MB
For the first time in 400 years a number of leading common law nations have, fairly simultaneously, embarked on charity law reform leading to an encoding of key definitional matters in charity legislation. This book provides an analysis of international case law developments on the ever growing range of issues now being generated by clashes between human rights, religion and charity law. Kerry O'Halloran identifies and assesses the agenda of 'moral imperatives', such as abortion and gay marriage that delineate the legal interface and considers their significance for those with and those without religious belief. By assessing jurisdictional differences in the law relating to religion/human rights/charity the author provides a picture of the evolving 'culture wars' that now typify and differentiates societies in western nations including the USA, England and Wales, Ireland, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Vincent Viaene, "Religion, Colonization and Decolonization in Congo, 1885-1960/Religion, colonisation et décolonisation au Congo, 1885-19"
English | ISBN: 9462701423 | 2020 | 336 pages | PDF | 36 MB
Religion in today's Democratic Republic of Congo has many faces: from the overflowing seminaries, the Marian shrines of the Catholic Church, the Islamic brotherhoods, and the Jewish community of Lubumbashi, to the 'African' churches of the Congolese diaspora in Brussels and Paris, the healers of Kimbanguism, the televangelism of the booming Pentecostalist churches in the great cities, the Orthodox communities of Kasai, and the 'invisible' Mai Mai warriors in the brousse of Kivu. During the colonial period religion was no less central to people's lives than it is today. More surprisingly, behind the seemingly smooth facade of missions linked closely to imperial power, also then faith and worship were marked by diversity and dynamism, tying the Congo into broader African and global movements.

Remote Sensing Image Processing Algorithms for Detecting Air Turbulence Patterns
by Maged Marghany

English | 2025 | ISBN: 103234458X | 377 pages | True PDF EPUB | 103.38 MB

Injuries due to air turbulence has increased recently, therefore there is considerable concern and interest in understanding and detecting it more accurately. Presently hardly any research deals with air turbulence detection using remote sensing images. Most works use conventional optical remote sensing data with classical methods such as a library spectral signature, band ratio, and principal component analysis without designating new methods and technology. Very little research has attempted to implement optical and microwave remote sensing images for air turbulence detections. This book provides new image processing procedures for air turbulence detection using advanced remote sensing images and quantum image processing. Currently, there is a huge gap between research work in the field of air turbulence detection and advanced remote sensing technology. Most of the theories are not operated in terms of software modules. Most of the software packages in the field of remote sensing images cannot deal with advanced image processing techniques in air turbulence detections due to heavy mathematics work. In this view, this book fills a gap between advanced remote sensing technology and air turbulence detection. For instance, quantum image processing with a new generation of remote sensing technology such as RADARSAT-2 SAR images is also implemented to provide accurate air turbulence detections. Comprises a broad overview of quantum theory for understanding automatic detection of airturbulence with remote sensing data. Quantum theory explains the electromagnetic wave ranges of varieties of remote sensing satellite data from short wavelength to long wavelength.

Travis Ingham, "Rendezvous By Submarine: The Story of Charles Parsons and the Guerrilla-Soldiers in the Philippines"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 1719958165 | EPUB | pages: 149 | 0.7 mb
During World War 2, Charles "Chick" Parsons led Filipino insurgents in hit-and-run raids on Japanese positions in Manila, spied on the enemy forces and became the eyes and ears for General MacArthur while he was preparing to retake the Philippines. Rendezvous By Submarine is the remarkable story of the American whom MacArthur described as, "the bravest man I ever met."

"A story of military and morale building that paid dividends to our advantage, told with the flourish and zest it deserves." - Kirkus Reviews.
