What does it mean to conceptualize pornography as a material practice rather than as speech?
Mason-Grant argues that this idea, fundamental to the work of Andrea Dworkin and Catharine MacKinnon, has been obscured in legal wrangling and political polarization over their civil ordinance. Within the arena of legal argument, where the principle of free speech holds sway for progressive thinkers, their analysis of pornography is rendered, at worse, an apology for censorship and, at best, an argument about the social force of speech, rather than recognized as a fundamental challenge to the very idea of pornography as speech. In this book, Mason-Grant first shows how the persistent "speech paradigm" inevitably obscures the innovative core of the Dworkin-MacKinnon critique of mainstream pornography. She then develops an alternative "practice paradigm" that critically engages their analysis, capturing and extending its core insights about the role of pornography in sexual practice. Drawing on phenomenology of the lived body, this alternative paradigm provides a way of re-thinking how the pervasive use of mass-market heterosexual pornography contributes to the cultivation of an embodied and tacit sexual know-how that is subordinating, and raises important questions about alternative materials produced and used by sexual minorities. In her conclusion, Mason-Grant considers the implications of her analysis not for law, but for a critical pedagogy in youth sexuality education.

Some economic phenomena are predictable and controllable, and some are impos sible to foresee. Existing economic theories do not provide satisfactory answers as to what degree economic phenomena can be predicted and controlled, and in what situations. This book is the proceedings of the third Nikkei symposium on ''Practical Fruits of Econophysics," held in Tokyo, November 9-11, 2004. In the first symposium held in 2000, empirical rules were established by analyzing high-frequency finan cial data, and various kinds of theoretical approaches were confimied. In the second symposium, in 2002, the predictability of imperfections and of economic fluctua tions was discussed in detail, and methods for applying such studies were reported. Der Autor
Dr.-Ing. Albert Heindl war nach seinem Studium des Maschinenbaus an der TU München am Fraunhofer-Institut für Lebensmitteltechnologie in München wissenschaftlich tätig. Er promovierte an der TU München/Weihenstephan über Mikrowellenvakuumtrocknung von Lebensmitteln und war danach Geschäftsführer der Heindl GmbH, mit Schwerpunkt Band- und Hordentrocknung sowie wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Agrartechnik in den Tropen und Subtropen der Universität Hohenheim. Anschließend war er bei der Riela Karl-Heinz Knoop e.K. hauptverantwortlich für die Nutzung von BHKW-Abwärme von Biogasanlagen zu Trocknungszwecken.
Albert Heindl ist heute im Bereich Forschung und Entwicklung im Technologiezentrum der HUBER SE tätig.

In September 1982, the Israeli military invaded West Beirut and Israel-allied Lebanese militiamen massacred Palestinians in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps. Meanwhile, Israeli forces also raided the Palestine Liberation Organization Research Center and trucked its complete library to Israel. Palestinian activists and supporters protested loudly to international organizations and the Western press, claiming that the assault on the Center proved that the Israelis sought to destroy not merely Palestinian militants but Palestinian culture as well. The protests succeeded: in November 1983, Israel returned the library as part of a prisoner exchange. What was in that library?
