The Seduction of Space: Cruising French Cinema
by Jules O'Dwyer
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1517916836 | 232 Pages | True PDF | 1.74 MB

A bold and far-reaching new study of French queer cinema reimagines the relationship between sexuality and space
Spatiality has long been a crucial and potent lens for understanding French culture and aesthetics. While canonical greats of French cinema such as Jean-Luc Godard, Agnès Varda, and Louis Malle invoked the notion of flânerie to explore ideas of modernism, spatial exploration, and urban sociality, Jules O'Dwyer demonstrates how a more recent generation of French queer filmmakers continues to engage with-and contest-this legacy by focusing attention on the cognate practice of cruising.
Through the work of Jacques Nolot, Sébastien Lifshitz, Christophe Honoré, Vincent Dieutre, Alain Guiraudie, and others, The Seduction of Space draws film theory, queer studies, and spatial inquiry into close proximity to examine the politics of cruising and the gendering of space. Making the case that cinema not only documents the queer spaces of the past but continues to produce them, O'Dwyer maps the relationships between sex and spatiality as he takes up such varied topics as public sex in the porn theater, racial eroticization in the banlieue, and the ecocritical valences of rural cruising.
Foregrounding the crucial role that spatiality plays in shaping the parameters of France's visual cultures and political imaginary, The Seduction of Space is both an urgent queer reconceptualization of this tradition and a clarion call for film scholars to tarry with the politics of sexuality in all its messiness.

The Selected Letters of John Cage edited by Laura Kuhn
English | June 7, 2016 | ISBN: 0819575917, 0819580872 | True PDF | 673 pages | 17.99 MB
Letters of an avant-garde icon

This selection of over five hundred letters gives us the life of John Cage with all the intelligence, wit, and inventiveness that made him such an important and groundbreaking composer and performer. The missives range from lengthy reports of his early trips to Europe in the 1930s through his years with the dancer Merce Cunningham, and shed new light on his growing eminence as an iconic performance artist of the American avant-garde. Cage's joie de vivre resounds in these letters―fully annotated throughout―in every phase of his career, and includes correspondence with Peter Yates, David Tudor, and Pierre Boulez, among others. Above all, they reveal his passionate interest in people, ideas, and the arts. The voice is one we recognize from his writings: singular, profound, irreverent, and funny. Not only will readers take pleasure in Cage's correspondence with and commentary about the people and events of a momentous and transformative time in the arts, they will also share in his meditations on the very nature of art.
A deep pleasure to read, this volume presents an extraordinary portrait of a complex, brilliant man who challenged and changed the artistic currents of the twentieth century.

Helena Panczova, "The Septuagint: Multilateral Focus on the Text: Multilateral Focus on the Text: Proceedings of the Conference Held in Br"
English | ISBN: 250361017X | 2024 | 317 pages | PDF | 3 MB
The phenomenon of the Septuagint is a matter of interest for several areas of research - not only for Old Testament scholars, but also for researchers of Hellenistic Judaism, patristic exegesis, translation theory and practice, and others. What they all have in common is the text of the Septuagint. Unfortunately, the research is often so compartmentalized that scholars do not know about each other's work and cannot profit from it. The aim of the conference "The Septuagint: Multilateral Focus on the Text" was to bring together scholars studying the text of the Septuagint it its various aspects: its reconstruction, peculiarities of language, and lexical semantics, in their relationship with the Semitic background and within the Greek-speaking world, whether Jewish or Christian. These different approaches to the same matter are bound to lead to mutual enrichment.

The Seven Deadly Sins Today By Henry Fairlie
2015 | 215 Pages | ISBN: 0268079781 | EPUB | 1 MB
Sin, like death, is an unassailable fact of life. It is also one of the last great taboos for public debate. In this compelling book, the Henry Fairlie shows that it is possible and necessary to talk about sin in ways that enrich our societies and our personal lives. Fairlie relates these ancient sins to the central issues of contemporary life: liberal vs. conservative politics, discrimination, pornography, abortion, the vistas of modern science, and especially the pop-psychologies that confirm the narcissism of our age.

The Seven Sayings of Jesus on the Cross: Their Circumstances and Meaning By Murray J. Harris
2016 | 124 Pages | ISBN: 1498237533 | EPUB | 1 MB
Who of us can possibly imagine the excruciating pain of being crucified? But further, who would imagine that in the midst of this ghastly punishment that brings on unrelenting headaches and mental disorientation, a crucified man would actually give thought to the needs of others? This book explores in detail the nature of crucifixion and then invites the reader to listen in stunned silence to the amazing seven sayings of Jesus of Nazareth while hanging on the cross, as he focuses his attention on others in the first three sayings, and only then on his own distressing situation. His last four sayings give expression to his utter spiritual and physical anguish and conclude with a cry of victory and then a cry in which he commits himself to God.

Sylvia A Harvey, "The Shadow System: Mass Incarceration and the American Family"
English | ISBN: 1568588801 | 2020 | 288 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB
From an award-winning journalist, a searing exposé of the effects of the mass incarceration crisis on families - including the 2.7 million American children who have a parent locked up.

In The Shadow System, award-winning journalist Sylvia A. Harvey follows the fears, challenges, and small victories of three families struggling to live within the confines of a brutal system. In Florida, a young father tries to maintain a relationship with his daughter despite a sentence of life without parole. In Kentucky, where the opioid epidemic has led to the increased incarceration of women, many of whom are white, one mother fights for custody of her children. In Mississippi, a wife steels herself for her husband's thirty-ninth year in prison and does her best to keep their sons close.
Through these stories, Harvey reveals a shadow system of laws and regulations enacted to dehumanize the incarcerated and profit off their families - from mandatory sentencing laws, to restrictions on prison visitation, to astronomical charges for brief phone calls.

The Signs of No (Brave & Brilliant)
by Judith Pond
English | 2024 | ISBN: 177385481X | 384 Pages | PDF | 3 MB

Rose is divorced, fifty, and estranged from her daughter. At a student art opening on a rainy March evening she meets Morrison, a genial hoarder and womb-twin survivor, who leads us to Abbey, a dancer who is losing the chance to become a mother, who leads us to Iris, a bright ten-year-old doing her best to handle her family breaking apart.
When her daughter vanishes completely, Rose seeks out her old friend Mab, the cheerful keeper of little bad signs. Following her only clue, a postcard bearing just a signature and a photo of a pristine lake, Rose chases after her daughter and her past mistakes. A ghost on the shore of Maxhamish Lake may hold the key to the true mystery, one unknown even to Rose, buried deep in the heart.
The Signs of No is a story of guilt and grief, of finding one's footing in middle life, and of discovery and reinvention. It traces the spiderweb cracks of invisible loss, common and uncommon, the losses that go without memorial or acknowledgment. It is a story about women, about motherhood, and the ways middle-aged women are underestimated, even by themselves.

The Silence of St. Thomas: Three Essays By Josef Pieper
2020 | 128 Pages | ISBN: 1890318787 | EPUB | 1 MB
A single theme runs through the three essays on St. Thomas gather in this book. It is the theme of mystery or, more exactly, the response of the searching human intellect to the fact of mystery. Both the fact and the response are suggested in a short biography of St. Thomas that forms the first essay and are then sketched out in detail by a presentation of the "negative element" in his philosophy. The third essay shows that contemporary Existentialism is in basic agreement with the philosophia perennis on this fundamental element of philosophical thinking.

The Silenced Muse: Emily Hale, T. S. Eliot, and the Role of a Lifetime by Sara Fitzgerald
English | September 3, 2024 | ISBN: 1538190354 | True EPUB | 332 pages | 8.1 MB
The first full-length biography of the longtime secret love of the celebrated poet T. S. Eliot, Emily Hale, called "heartbreaking" by ✅Publishers Weekly and The Washington Post calls "a meticulously researched book that reads like a novel."

In January 2020, the largest and most eagerly awaited cache of new materials written by the Nobel-Prize-winning poet T. S. Eliot was finally opened: the 1,131 letters he sent Emily Hale, his little-known American love. But even as Eliot scholars explore Hale's impact on Eliot's work, a tantalizing question has not been fully answered: who was Emily Hale?
Sara Fitzgerald's The Silenced Muse: Emily Hale, T. S. Eliot, and the Role of a Lifetime is the first full-length biography devoted to Hale, telling her side of a complicated relationship. Based on the embargoed letters and Fitzgerald's extensive research into Hale's life and times, this book brings to light that Hale was much more than just a muse to a literary celebrity. Hale overcame personal hardship to pursue a career as a professor of speech and drama at prominent American women's colleges and schools. She was a talented amateur actress and director, sharing the stage with others who went on to notable professional careers. Behind the scenes, she also guided Eliot as he began to explore playwriting with works such as Murder in the Cathedral.
Hale's story is challenging to wholly uncover because the Boston clergyman's daughter was by nature reticent and humble. More critically, Eliot arranged for nearly all of her letters to be destroyed. The Silenced Muse finally reveals that Hale's story is not that of a lover scorned, but rather a woman who was herself gifted and celebrated by her students and peers.

The Sirens' Call: How Attention Became the World's Most Endangered Resource by Chris Hayes
English | January 28, 2025 | ISBN: 0593653114 | True EPUB | 336 pages | 1.8 MB
From the New York Times bestselling author and MSNBC and podcast host, a powerful wide-angle reckoning with how the assault from attention capitalism on our minds and our hearts has reordered our politics and the very fabric of our society

We all feel it-the distraction, the loss of focus, the addictive focus on the wrong things for too long. We bump into the zombies on their phones in the street, and sometimes they're us. We stare in pity at the four people at the table in the restaurant, all on their phones, and then we feel the buzz in our pocket. Something has changed utterly: for most of human history, the boundary between public and private has been clear, at least in theory. Now, as Chris Hayes writes, "With the help of a few tech firms, we basically tore it down in about a decade." Hayes argues that we are in the midst of an epoch-defining transition whose only parallel is what happened to labor in the nineteenth century: attention has become a commodified resource extracted from us, and from which we are increasingly alienated. The Sirens' Call is the big-picture vision we urgently need to offer clarity and guidance.
Because there is a breaking point. Sirens are designed to compel us, and now they are going off in our bedrooms and kitchens at all hours of the day and night, doing the bidding of vast empires, the most valuable companies in history, built on harvesting human attention. As Hayes writes, "Now our deepest neurological structures, human evolutionary inheritances, and social impulses are in a habitat designed to prey upon, to cultivate, distort, or destroy that which most fundamentally makes us human." The Sirens' Call is the book that snaps everything into a single holistic framework so that we can wrest back control of our lives, our politics, and our future.

English | 2 Jan. 2025 | ISBN: 0008527687 | True EPUB | 432 pages | 0.9 MB
One ordinary school. Three extraordinary women ...

In the 1920s, three young girls enter a strict, cheerless convent school in a quiet London suburb.
Six years later they leave, to change the world ...
Maureen was the movie star, whose role as Tarzan's Jane helped rewrite the rules of cinema censorship.
Sonia was the aspiring writer who became George Orwell's wife and the guardian of his literary legacy.
And Vivien was the actress as iconic as the roles she played, from Cleopatra to Scarlett O'Hara.
Together their careers encompassed glamour and tragedy, triumph and scandal. From Bloomsbury to Hollywood, and from the cafés of Paris to the theatres of New York, this novel is a breath-taking epic spanning four decades in three unforgettable lives.

The Socio-spatial Design of Community and Governance: Interdisciplinary Urban Design in China by Sam Jacoby
English | EPUB | 2020 | 230 Pages | ISBN : 9811568103 | 209.4 MB
This book proposes a new interdisciplinary understanding of urban design in China based on a study of the transformative effects of socio-spatial design and planning on communities and their governance.

This is framed by an examination of the social projects, spaces, and realities that have shaped three contexts critical to the understanding of urban design problems in China: the histories of "collective forms" and "collective spaces", such as that of the urban danwei (work-unit), which inform current community building and planning; socio-spatial changes in urban and rural development; and disparate practices of "spatialised governmentality".
These contexts and an attendant transformation from planning to design and from government to governance, define the current urban design challenges found in the dominant urban xiaoqu (small district) and shequ (community) development model. Examining the histories, transformations, and practices that have shaped socio-spatial epistemologies and experiences in China - including a specific sense of community and place that is rather based on a concrete "collective" than abstract "public" space and underpinned by socialised governance - this book brings together a diverse range of observations, thoughts, analyses, and projects by urban researchers and practitioners. Thereby discussing emerging interdisciplinary urban design practices in China, this book offers a valuable resource for all academics, practitioners, and stakeholders with an interest in socio-spatial design and development.

The Sociology of Political Crisis
by Michel Dobry
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1350373354 | 243 Pages | True PDF | 2.1 MB

The Sociology of Political Crisis explores political mobilization as an extension of the resource mobilization perspective on social movements. The emphasis on "desectorisation" in explaining how movements mobilize into full blown political crises and potential agents of social change provides a timely theoretical insight into contemporary culture.
In part a critique of social constructionism, this book points to a generalized overemphasis on non-material aspects of political mobilization. Michel Dobry's analytical style in the pursuit of "Fluid Conjunctures" develops a considerably sophisticated approach to social process. This first translation of a classic work in political sociology freely moves in and out of philosophical currents in a sophisticated and extremely timely way.

Mikhail Kizilov, "The Sons of Scripture: The Karaites in Poland and Lithuania in the Twentieth Century"
English | ISBN: 3110425254 | 2015 | 527 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
Drawing on the variety of archival sources in the host of European and Oriental languages, the book focuses on the history, ethnography, and convoluted ethnic identity of the Polish-Lithuanian Karaites. The vanishing community of the Karaites, a non-Talmudic Turkic-speaking Jewish minority that had been living in Eastern Europe since the late Middle Ages, developed a unique ethnographic culture and religious tradition. The book offers the first comprehensive study of the dramatic history of the Polish-Lithuanian Karaite community in the twentieth century. Especially important is the analysis of the dejudaization (or Turkicization) of the community that saved the Karaites from horrors of the Holocaust.

Recent research in the philosophy of religion, anthropology, and philosophy of mind has prompted the need for a more integrated, comprehensive, and systematic theology of human nature. This project constructively develops a theological accounting of human persons by drawing from a Cartesian (as a term of art) model of anthropology, which is motivated by a long tradition. As was common among patristics, medievals, and Reformed Scholastics, Farris draws from philosophical resources to articulate Christian doctrine as he approaches theological anthropology. Exploring a substance dualism model, the author highlights relevant theological texts and passages of Scripture, arguing that this model accounts for doctrinal essentials concerning theological anthropology. While Farris is not explicitly interested in thorough critique of materialist ontology, he notes some of the significant problems associated with it. Rather, the present project is an attempt to revitalize the resources found in Cartesianism by responding to some common worries associated with it.

The South: A Novel by Tash Aw
English | 13 Feb. 2025 | ISBN: 0008637601 | True EPUB | 314 pages | 1.4 MB
'A mesmerising tale. Both heartbreaking and joyful' MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM

A radiant novel of the longing that blooms between two boys over the course of one summer - about family, desire, and what we inherit - from celebrated author Tash Aw.
'Shimmeringly intelligent and elegiacally intimate' YIYUN LI
CHOSEN AS A TIMES, GUARDIAN and FINANCIAL TIMES BOOK OF 2025.
When his grandfather dies, a boy named Jay travels south with his family to the property he left them, a once flourishing farm that has fallen into disrepair. The trees are diseased, the fields parched from months of drought.
Still, Jay's father, Jack, sends him out to work the land, or whatever land is left. Over the course of these hot, dense days, Jay finds himself drawn to Chuan, the son of the farm's manager, different from him in every way except for one.
Out in the fields, and on the streets into town, the charge between the boys intensifies. Inside the house, the other family members confront their own regrets, and begin to drift apart. Like the land around them, they are powerless to resist the global forces that threaten to render their lives obsolete.
At once sweeping and intimate, The South is a story of what happens when private and public lives collide. It is the first in a quartet of novels that form Tash Aw's masterful portrait of a family navigating a period of great change - a reimagined epic for our times.
