Read Mark and Learn: Following Mark's Jesus By Derek Tovey
2014 | 146 Pages | ISBN: 1625641389 | EPUB | 1 MB
Mark's Gospel ends in an open-ended manner that puzzles many readers. This is part of the evangelist's strategy, so this book maintains; it raises questions about who Jesus is and what it means to follow Jesus. The Gospel writer addresses these two themes as he develops his story of Jesus. Readers are drawn in to consider these themes for themselves. Although there is an open end to the story of the disciples' discipleship, there is an ending to their story embedded in the narrative. Read Mark and Learn aims to help readers engage with this Gospel's intriguing story and to learn from it.

Reading Anselm's Proslogion: The History of Anselm's Argument and its Significance Today (Routledge New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology and Biblical Studies) By Ian Logan
2009 | 230 Pages | ISBN: 0754661237 | PDF | 1 MB
Anselm's Proslogion has sparked controversy from the time it was written (c.1077) to the present day. Attempts to provide definitive accounts of its argument have led to a wide and contradictory variety of interpretations. In this book, Ian Logan goes back to basics, to the Latin text of the Proslogion with an original parallel English translation, before tracing the twists and turns of this controversy. Helping us to understand how the same argument came to be regarded as based on reason alone by some and on faith alone by others, as a logically sound demonstration by its supporters and as fatally flawed by its opponents, Logan considers what Anselm is setting out to do in the Proslogion, how his argument works, and whether it is successful.

Reading at the Limits of Poetic Form: Dematerialization in Adorno, Blanchot, and Celan
by Jacob McGuinn
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0810146991 | 260 Pages | PDF | 1.19 MB

Pushing the boundaries of critical reading and the role of objects in literature
How does literary objecthood contend with the challenge of writing objects that emerge at an extreme limit of material presence? Jacob McGuinn delves into the ways literature writes this indeterminate presence in the context of pre- and post-'68 Paris, a vital moment in the history of criticism. The works of poet Paul Celan, philosopher Theodor Adorno, and writer Maurice Blanchot highlight how the complexities of reading such a dematerialized object are part of the indeterminacy of material itself. Indeterminate objects-glass, snow, walls, screens-are subjects Celan describes as existing in "meridian" space, while for Adorno and Blanchot, criticism not only responds to this indeterminacy but also takes it as its condition. Reading at the Limits of Poetic Form: Dematerialization in Adorno, Blanchot, and Celan shows how these readings simultaneously limit the object of criticism and outline alternative ways of thinking that lie between the models of critical formalism and historicism, ultimately revealing the possible materiality of literature in unrealized history, incomplete politics, and nondetermining thinking.

Reading Bonhoeffer: A Guide to His Spiritual Classics and Selected Writings on Peace By Geffrey B. Kelly
2009 | 198 Pages | ISBN: 1556352360 | EPUB | 1 MB
Dorothee Soelle once wrote, Dietrich Bonhoeffer is the one German theologian who will lead us into the third millennium. As we near the end of the first decade of this third millennium, Bonhoeffer continues to inspire new generations as a spiritual guide for their actions on behalf of peace and social justice. This book by Geffrey Kelly provides a critical analysis and reading guide to two of the spiritual classics that are now available in new translations through Fortress Press. Reading Bonhoeffer offers a running commentary of each segment of these popular texts along with discussion questions suitable for the university and seminary classroom as well as parish adult education programs. In a final section of the book, Kelly excerpts and analyzes three significant texts by Bonhoeffer on the need for world peace against the rising militarism and continued glorification of war in Germany and other European nations.

Reading Gender: Studies on Medieval Manuscripts and Medievalist Movies
by Felice Lifshitz
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032392436 | 268 Pages | True ePUB | 1.33 MB

This collection brings together twelve essays published between 1988 and 2014, two of which are here translated into English from (respectively) their original French or German. All the essays use gender as the main category of analysis, whether of late ancient or early medieval texts or of modern medievalist films.
The historical studies of medieval Europe emphasize the use of manuscript-level evidence, that is, actual sources from the period in question; arguably, this approach provides a more accurate understanding of the period than does work done on the basis of printed and edited sources. Furthermore, many of the manuscript-based essays specifically exploit liturgical or liturgy-adjacent materials; this is an area of research and a type of manuscript that has rarely been approached through a gendered lens. Meanwhile, the cinematic medievalism essays focus on the processes of remediation and adaptation, searching specifically for points at which filmmaking teams diverged from their sources as evidence for the main goals of the films (while also attending to production contexts and to reception).
The juxtaposition in a single collection of scholarship on medieval manuscripts and modern movies illustrates how period specialists can contribute to conversations in the field of (historical) film studies. The book will be of interest to historians of women, gender, Christian liturgy, medieval Europe, medievalism, and historical film.

Reading the Sermons of Thomas Aquinas: A Beginner's Guide (Renewal Within Tradition) By Randall B. Smith
2016 | 376 Pages | ISBN: 194144797X | EPUB | 1 MB
Preaching was immensely important in the medieval Church, and Thomas Aquinas expended much time and effort preaching. Today, however, Aquinas's sermons remain relatively unstudied and underappreciated. This is largely because their sermo modernus style, typical of the thirteenth century, can appear odd and inaccessible to the modern reader. In Reading the Sermons of Thomas Aquinas, Randall Smith guides the reader through Aquinas's sermons, explaining their form and content. In the process, one comes to appreciate the sermons in their rhetorical brilliance, beauty, and profound spiritual depth while simultaneously being initiated into a fascinating world of thought concerning Scripture, language, and the human mind. The book also includes analytical outlines for all of Aquinas's extant sermons. Reading the Sermons of Thomas Aquinas: A Beginner's Guide is an indispensable volume for those interested in the thought of Aquinas, in the intellectual and spiritual milieu in which he worked, and in the manifold ways of preaching the Gospel message.

Reading the Waves: A Memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch
English | February 4, 2025 | ISBN: 0593713052 | True EPUB | 224 pages | 2.9 MB
The frank and revealing memoir of a writer who draws from her own creativity to heal.

"I believe our bodies are carriers of experience," Lidia Yuknavitch writes in her provocative memoir Reading the Waves. "I mean to ask if there is a way to read my own past differently, using what I have learned from literature: how stories repeat and reverberate and release us from the tyranny of our mistakes, our traumas, and our confusions."
Drawing on her background - her father's abuse, her complicated dynamic with her disabled mother, the death of her child, her sexual relationships with men and women - and her creative life as an author and teacher, Yuknavitch has come to understand that by using the power of literature and storytelling to reframe her memories, she can loosen the bonds that have enslaved her emotional growth. Armed with this insight, she allows herself to look with the eye of an artist at the wounds she suffered and come to understand the transformational power this has to restore her soul.
By turns candid and lyrical, stoic and forgiving, blunt and evocative, Reading the Waves reframes memory to show how crucial this process can be to gaining a deeper understanding of ourselves.

Reading the Way, Paul, and "The Jews" in Acts within Judaism: "Among My Own Nation" (The Library of New Testament Studies) By Jason F. Moraff
2024 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 056771246X | EPUB | 1 MB
Jason F. Moraffchallenges the contention that Acts' sharp rhetoric and portrayal of "the Jews" reflects anti-Judaism and supersessionism. He argues that, rather than constructing Christian identity in contrast to Judaism, Acts binds the Way, Paul, and "the Jews" together into a shared identity as Israel, and that together they embark on a journey of repentance with common Jewishness providing the foundation. Acts leverages Jewish kinship, language, cult, and custom to portray the Way, Paul, and "the Jews" as one family debating the direction of their ancestral tradition. Using a historically situated narrative approach, Moraff frames Acts' portrayal of the Way and Paul in relation to the Jewish people as participating in internecine conflict regarding the Jewish tradition-in-crisis, after the destruction of the temple. By exploring ancient ethnicity, Jewish identity and Lukan characterization, images of the Jews, the Way, and Paul, violence in Acts and the theme of blindness in Luke's gospel, the Pauline writings and Acts, Moraff stresses that Acts speaks from "among my own nation," meaning "the Jews", and makes it possible to understand Acts' critical characterization of "the Jews" within Second Temple Judaism.

Readings of the Gateless Barrier
by Jimmy Yu
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0231207360 | 364 Pages | PDF | 6.06 MB

The Gateless Barrier is one of the most cherished yet also one of the most enigmatic Chan or Zen texts of East Asian Buddhism. Compiled by the Chinese Chan master Wumen Huikai in 1228, it contains forty-eight Zen stories of spiritual awakening called "public cases" or gong'ans (known as kōans in Japanese and kongans in Korean). This book presents a new English translation with close readings and creative analyses of the Gateless Barrier from both scholarly and practitioner perspectives, allowing a range of readers to venture into the rich world of Chan and Zen.
Specialist contributors offer insights on historical context, literary structure, philosophical implications, and gendered dimensions, as well as the embodied practice and contemporary experience of the stories in the Gateless Barrier. By bringing together academic expertise with experiential insight from Zen teachers, this book provides a grounded and nuanced account of how the Gateless Barrier has been―and continues to be―practiced and lived in China, Korea, Japan, and the West.
An innovative and sophisticated study, this book is ideal for university classroom use, and it also makes the Gateless Barrier accessible to other first-time readers, Buddhist practitioners, and scholars.

Real and Complex Singularities: São Carlos Workshop 2004 by Jean-Paul Brasselet, Maria Aparecida Soares Ruas
English | PDF (True) | 2007 | 363 Pages | ISBN : 3764377755 | 3.8 MB
The São Carlos Workshop on Real and Complex Singularities is the longest running workshop in singularities. It is held every two years and is a key international event for people working in the field. This volume contains papers presented at the eighth workshop, held at the IML, Marseille, July 19-23, 2004.

The workshop offers the opportunity to establish the state of the art and to present new trends, new ideas and new results in all of the branches of singularities. This is reflected by the contributions in this book. The main topics discussed are equisingularity of sets and mappings, geometry of singular complex analytic sets, singularities of mappings, characteristic classes, classification of singularities, interaction of singularity theory with some of the new ideas in algebraic geometry imported from theoretical physics, and applications of singularity theory to geometry of surfaces in low dimensional euclidean spaces, to differential equations and to bifurcation theory.

Real Happiness: A Roadmap for Healing our Pain and Awakening the Joy that is our Birthright By Paul Ferrini
2014 | 155 Pages | ISBN: 1879159686 | EPUB | 1 MB
This book is not about the kind of happiness you see on billboardsor television commercials. It has nothing to do with theoverly romanticized or idealized type of happiness. It has to dowith being present right now for the ups and downs of life in aloving and compassionate way. It is about being ourselves fullyand being responsible for what we are creating in our lives.I like to call it Real Happiness because it is about being realas a human being and coming face to face with our fear and ourpain. It is about being willing to heal our wounds so that we canreconnect with the joy that is our birthright.Of course, being real isn't easy. To be real we need to feelsafe enough to cry our tears as well as to sing our songs of gratitudeand praise. We need to be strong enough to stop blamingothers and brave enough to learn our lessons.Real happiness means overcoming our negativity and beginningto count our blessings so we can experience the mysteriousbeauty of life. It means learning to surrender, to let go of theneed to control, and to allow our lives to unfold in their ownnatural, organic way. It is about becoming fully, uniquely andIt is about becoming fully, uniquely and exquisitely human.

Real Philosophy for Real People: Tools for Truthful Living By Fr. Robert McTeigue .S.J.
2020 | 283 Pages | ISBN: 1621643484 | EPUB | 1 MB
A great philosopher once observed, "Philosophers let theories get in the way of what they and everybody else know." A lot of ink has been spilt in order to obscure what we really can't not know about reality, humanity and morality. In the midst of a culture permeated by philosophies that seek to redefine the universally available meaning of what it is to be human, Fr. Robert McTeigue says it is more important than ever to be equipped with reliable philosophical tools that help us to see clearly the implications of our stated moral claims; that enable us to detect moral and logical error; and that keep us grounded in the love of truth. You will find such tools in these pages that explore what it means to be human with metaphysical, anthropological, and ethical dimensions. But this book does more than offer tools for seeing and understanding. It is a refutation of philosophies which prize love of theory over love of truth; a rebuke of any metaphysics that cannot account for itself; a refutation of anthropologies which are unworthy of the human person; and a refutation of ethical systems which reduce the great dignity and destiny of the human person. Most importantly, this book is a prescription for an alternative: it is a real philosophy for real people, wherein the best of classical philosophy finds its fulfillment, expressed in a contemporary idiom that is accessible to the layman and plausible to the scholar. It offers a catalog of errors with their refutations, and a map for living a truly human life. It is a portable error-detector, while providing a basis for knowing and presenting the truth.

Am 12. Januar 2008 feierte Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Peter Lerche, emeritierter Ordinarius für Öffentliches Recht an der Universität München, seinen 80. Geburtstag.

Realm of Unknowing: Meditations on Art, Suicide, and Other Transformations by Mark Rudman
English | April 21, 1995 | ISBN: 0819522201, 0819512249 | True EPUB | 193 pages | 0.99 MB
Powerful meditations on the nature and limits of human understanding.

"Mark Rudman's criticism is a unique blend of passion, clarity, and disquiet. I can think of no one who writes about poetry with greater commitment to the written word, who understands more deeply that to ask questions about art is to ask questions about life. In challenging himself, Rudman provokes us to challenge ourselves, and the result is a book of exceptional quality: erudite and idiosyncratic, a book that engages both heart and mind."―Paul Auster
"The inquiry, which you follow with brilliance and irony as well as with powerful curiosity, that pushes your writing towards all the recesses of your memory (and your life), is a model of the genre."―Antoine de Baecque, Cahiers du Cinema
"Rudman's work projects an individual voice, a distinctive sensibility. There is something very fresh and alive about this book."―Irving Howe

Rebel Angel: The Life and Times of Annemarie Schwarzenbach by Padraig Rooney
English | January 23, 2025 | ISBN: 1509566295 | True EPUB | 352 pages | 2.5 MB
Annemarie Schwarzenbach was one of the twentieth century's most remarkable women, possibly the greatest sexual and political radical of the 1930s. But until now she's been largely ignored.

Born to a wealthy family in Switzerland, as a teenager she rebelled against her domineering pro-Nazi mother. She immersed herself in the antifascist, queer and artistic circles of the German diaspora of the 1930s. Her edgy glamour and androgynous beauty turned heads in the lesbian nightclubs of Weimar Berlin, on the ski slopes of St. Moritz, and in New York's luxury hotels and jazz bars.
Constantly on the move, Annemarie chronicled the low and dishonest decade leading to war through her unique journalism, writing and photography. Her work was as adventurous and uncompromising as her personal life, and reveals a deep courage, intelligence, and ambition tragically curtailed by her untimely death.
